celebration

The Service-Learning Center is turning 50!

The anniversary is a milestone and an opportunity: to remember humble beginnings as a student organization, to tell the story of its growth, and to honor those alumni and partners who have played key parts in the development of what is now a flourishing, nationally recognized department. The anniversary brings us together to rekindle old friendships, make new connections, and be inspired to deeper service-learning.

Let’s celebrate what God has done.

We hope you’ve saved the date for the Service-Learning Center’s 50th Anniversary celebrations. The weekend is fast approaching, and it’s time to register! Below, you can register for the whole weekend, but if you’re unable to participate fully, you can register for individual aspects of the event.

Meet, Greet, and Learn, Johnny’s and Patio
7:00PM-9:00PM - Cost: $10

We’ll kick off our weekend festivities with a time of story-telling and socializing. Key figures will give informal presentations about the history and hopes of the S-LC, and we’ll trade tales of our own experiences of the Service-Learning Center’s first fifty years.

Saturday, June 7, 2014

Brunch, Commons Dining Hall
10:00AM-12:00PM - Cost: $10

Reconnect with other Service-Learning Center alumni over brunches featuring former directors and their contribution to the S-LC legacy. After breaking bread together, we’ll walk over to the Bunker for the next portion of our celebration.

Service-Learning with Plaster Creek Stewards,
Bunker Interpretive Center, 12:30PM-3:30PM

We’ll learn about the work of Plaster Creek Stewards and then participate in it, planting native plants in a large bio-swale on campus that will help to capture stormwater that flows into Whiskey Creek,a tributary to Plaster Creek. The urban sections of the Plaster Creek watershed near Madison Square Church and Roosevelt Park Christian Reformed Church are the recipients of a disproportionate amount of pollution and bacterial contamination. Our work will help to address this environmental injustice by caring for our downstream neighbors in concrete ways.

50th Anniversary Celebrations
Kroc Center, 6:00PM-9:00PM - Cost: $10

Together with the Calvin community, we’ll formally honor the Service-Learning Center’s legacy. Good food and good conversation will frame a time of looking forward to new partnerships and opportunities for the Service-Learning Center’s bright future.
