Seminar Description
Jewish scholar, Michael Fishbane suggests that, “….everything
depends on how we read; on how we enter the magic circle of a text’s
meanings; on how we smuggle ourselves into its words, and allow the texture
of a text to weave its web around us.” If he is right, and you agree,
then consider applying to the workshop Keeping and Talking the Word:
Scripture Memorization for Contemplation, Formation, and Proclamation.
Some years ago Timothy Brown sat in stunned silence as an accomplished
British actor performed the Gospel of Mark on a local college campus.
He thought if an actor would do such a thing for $5 a ticket, why wouldn't
a pastor do this to feed the flock? From that day on he smuggled his way
into the Word, wrapping it around him like a comforter on a cold winter
night and then throwing it over the shivering souls of people he loved
Sunday after Sunday. To that end this seminar will both explore and practice
one of the primal instincts and spiritual disciplines of the people of
God, namely scripture meditation and memorization, for the purposes of
spiritual formation and pastoral performance.
This seminar is specifically for the preacher who wants to deepen his
or her experience of sermon preparation through contemplation and memorization,
for the worship leader who wants to bring every thought in worship captive
to Christ, for the teacher who wants to assist themselves and their students
in keeping the Word in their hearts, and for anyone who longs, with the
psalmist, to plant themselves by streams of living water.
