Communitas: A Visiting Scholars Program
Available for four weeks between
June 20 and July 22, 2011
No Longer Accepting Applications.
Who May Apply
Scholars with PhDs (or accepted terminal degrees) in their fields who are able to demonstrate a commitment to Christian scholarship and are committed to producing original research in their fields are welcome to apply. Scholars applying for a 2011 summer seminar at Calvin are ineligible for the 2011 Communitas program.
To apply, an applicant must submit the application form. In addition to general applicant information, the application form will require:
- A curriculum vitae or resume
- An abstract of your research project. Please also indicate how you would profit from your time at Calvin.
- A brief (500 word) statement of your vocation as a Christian scholar
- Names and contact information for two (2) references
We will send an email confirmation within 10 days of receiving your complete application. If you do not hear from us, please contact us to determine whether your completed application has been received.
Visiting scholars and fellows will be selected based on the quality of the proposed research project, the articulation of how the scholar would benefit from a stay at Calvin, the relevance of the project to Calvin’s resources, and the synergy of the project with the 2011 seminars offered.
The application deadline is January 14, 2011. Participant selections will take place after the application deadline. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered.

Communitas scholars are responsible for their own travel expenses and any other expenses. Any visa arrangements and fees for visiting international scholars are the responsibility of the scholar.
On-campus lodging is provided for participants in air-conditioned two-bedroom student apartments with a kitchen, free in-building laundry facilities, and ethernet hookup capabilities. Weekday morning coffee breaks and lunches are provided for scholars. Scholars have access to all college facilities, including the college library (the most extensive research collection in West Michigan), sports facilities, and computer labs. Organized activities for children, as well as group events and excursions are offered. The Seminars staff will make all logistical arrangements for scholars and their families.
The Seminars office is offering two Communitas fellowships with funds provided by the Provost's Office of Calvin College, to scholars who will be selected on a competitive basis from the applications. The fellowships cover the costs for four weeks in residence as noted above (Communitas fellows are responsible for their own travel expenses, visa fees, additional week fees, and any other expenses). Scholars requesting consideration for a fellowship should follow the application procedures and indicate their request on the submitted application form. Scholars, who have support from their home institutions, should consider not applying for the fellowships so that they can be used to assist scholars from smaller institutions or developing nations. However, all are invited to apply.
The application process is closed.
