Seminars 2009 - Deliver Us from Evil

Deliver Us from Evil: Genocide and the Christian World

James E. Waller, Ph.D.
June 22 - July 10, 2009

Applicant Information

Who May Apply
The seminar will be interdisciplinary in nature and will encourage applications from junior and senior faculty (Ph.D. or appropriate terminal degree) and advanced graduate students representing a variety of academic perspectives in the humanities (philosophy, history, theology, literature), social sciences (psychology, sociology, political science, anthropology, economics), and the fine arts. The interests and background that bring participants to this seminar could come from a variety of perspectives – war, collective violence, genocide, conflict resolution, the church and its role in society, church-state relations, post-conflict healing and reconciliation, etc. While it is expected that participation in this seminar will inform teaching strategies in related fields, priority will be given to applicants who are able to demonstrate how participation in this seminar will promote new, or continuing, first-order scholarship in a topic with clear and close links to the seminar focus.

To facilitate dissemination of the seminar’s work, each participant will be invited to contribute a paper on some aspect of the seminar topic that will be submitted for a special interdisciplinary issue of the Journal of Genocide Research or an edited collection (publisher to be arranged). Participants also will be invited to participate in panels at relevant professional conferences – for instance, Holocaust Educational Foundation (biennial), International Association of Genocide Scholars (biennial), and the Annual Scholars’ Conference on the Churches and the Holocaust. Participants will be expected to receive travel support for such conferences from their home institutions.

How to Apply
To apply, an applicant must submit the following:

  • this application form
  • a curriculum vitae or resume
  • a 2-3 page statement of interest demonstrating how their participation in this seminar will promote new, or continuing, first-order scholarship in a topic with clear and close links to the seminar focus.  This statement of interest also may include references to courses currently taught by the applicant that intersect with the seminar focus as well as other professional activities that might promote a unique contribution to the dynamic, interdisciplinary learning community of the seminar.

The CV/resume and statement of interest must be sent as separate Word document attachments to seminars@calvin.edu with "Deliver Us from Evil" in the subject line, and the applicant's name in the body of the email.

You will receive an email confirmation within 10 days of submitting your complete application. If you do not hear from us, please call us to determine whether your complete application has been received.

The application deadline is January 30, 2009. Participants will be selected after the application deadline. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified of their status by March 1, 2009.
