Abstract for Session 5C

“Soul Projects: Class-Related Spiritual Practices in Higher Education,” James Wilhoit, Daniel Haase, Don Ratcliff, Linda Rozema, & David Setran (Wheaton College)

Abstract
In our work with students, we have discovered that growth toward Christlikeness is most likely to occur when we create assignments that allow students to practically engage in classroom-related spiritual activities.  This growth, born out of sensitivity to the role of the Holy Spirit in teaching, helps to “train in righteousness” those students who are in our care.  The scope of this article is to explore the role and function within the university classroom of what we have termed “soul projects,” class assignments designed to foster spiritual attentiveness. Our experience is rooted in the context of an evangelical liberal arts institution (Wheaton College) in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois.
