"Pedagogies of Love in a Mennonite Brethren University," Karen Crozier & Angulus Wilson (Fresno Pacific University)
Abstract
The Greatest Commandment as found in Matthew 22:37-40 forms the basis of this study. Drawing from survey and interview data of faculty at a Mennonite Brethren university, attention will be given to their experience, practice, understanding, and observation of love of God, neighbor, and self as academicians. A brief history of the university and its current student and faculty population are presented to provide the context for comprehending results from the study. Implications are discussed in light of how Christian higher education can maintain its integrity and relevance in the midst of a growing religiously and spiritually diverse student body.
“What Does It Mean to Love a Student?” Matt Bonzo (Cornerstone University)
Abstract
This paper will begin by examining the lack of complexity in our common understandings of love, As a result, to speak of love in the classroom is often seen to violate certain norms (e.g. objectivity, sexual morality, professionalism). But if we deepen our understanding of love, we can again frame our practices within the context of care for the whole individual. In the second part of the paper, I want to consider several practices such as intentional community, simplicity, and gratitude as ways of embodying love for and with students.
