"‘Being School’ in the 21st Century,” Doug Blomberg (Calvin College)
Abstract
One of the practices most identified with Christianity is that of “going to church”; as we know, however, it is “being a church” that is of most significance. The “home church” movement is an alternative to the long dominant tradition of congregating in large, often “sacred”, public spaces and seeks to foster a less formal, more relational, embodiment of the gospel. The paper will draw on accounts of 1st Century and contemporary home churches to explore this different way of going to/being a church and will then consider implications for the shape of schooling practice.
“Leadership Theories and the Development of Christian Practices,” Albert Boerema (Calvin College)
Abstract
Leadership plays an important role in Christian learning and practices. This paper is an exploration of leadership theory and how its expression in Christian schools can promote or inhibit the development of Christian practices. Beginning with a critique of mainstream and critical leadership theory, the study goes on to outline some of the parameters of a leadership theory rooted in biblical norms and themes.
