Teaching and Learning as Spiritual Disciplines

Applicant Information

Who May Apply
We invite applications by academics, educators, and pastors with an interest in the history of Christian education and a willingness to explore its relevance for the modern practice of Christian pedagogy.

Applicants are expected to have a Masters degree or higher in the fields of history, theology, education, or other fields related to the topic of the seminar, or at least a B.A. and five years of relevant experience.

Workshop Details
Eligible participants* will receive a $300 stipend. Accommodation costs for nonlocal participants, breakfast, lunch, and all materials will also be covered by the Kuyers Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning. Participants will be responsible for their own travel costs and evening meals. Families are welcome for a modest additional cost; please contact the Seminars office for further details.

*Eligibility requirements for a monetary stipend include compliance with federal and campus regulations. All stipends are taxable income. Non-U.S. citizens will need to show/obtain a visa that indicates their eligibility to work in the U.S. and a U.S. tax identification number.

Facilities and Services
The seminar staff will make all logistical arrangements for participants. Double-occupancy lodging for nonlocal participants will be in hotel rooms at the Prince Conference Center at Calvin College. All college facilities--including the college library (the most extensive research collection in West Michigan), networked computers, and sports facilities--are available for participants and their families.

How to Apply
To apply, an applicant must submit the following:
1) the application form
2) a curriculum vitae or resume
3) a cover letter, highlighting the applicant’s qualifications for and interest in participating in this seminar
4) a 1,000 words (max.) essay demonstrating the applicant’s interest in the topic, its relevance to one’s field of research or educational/pastoral practice, and a statement on how this seminar might influence the applicant’s vocation

Items 2) through 4) must be sent as separate Word document attachments to seminars@calvin.edu with "Teaching and Learning as Spiritual Disciplines" in the subject line, and the applicant's name in the body of the email.

You will receive an email confirmation within 10 days of submitting your complete application. If you do not hear from us, please call us to determine whether your complete application has been received.

The application deadline is January 31, 2008. Participants will be selected after the application deadline. Incomplete and/or late applications will not be considered. Applicants will be notified of their status by March 14, 2008.
