The Consultation of Afro-Christian Scholars in Higher Education is a by invitation only workshop.

The focus of the 2003 Consultation was to read and critique articles, essays, and papers by participants, marking a turning point to more earnestly embark on the difficult work of creating a scientific or scholarly community based upon Afro-Christian thought and praxis. The following questions were addressed in relation to the articles, essays, and papers that were read and presented: 1) In what way is your article an example of the Christian mind at work? What Christian assumptions are embedded in your work? 2) How does the Christian mind reflected in your writing intersect with African existence, discourse, and history? 3) How do the scholarship and Christian views in your work stand within the African American Christian intellectual tradition? 4) How do you intend your work to be angled toward crucial concerns for African Americans?

Prior to the 2005 Consultation, participants will share writing and research plans and continue to read and critique each other's work. Some participants plan to work collaboratively on case studies that address issues of leadership in the Black Church, especially issues related to the treatment and development of women. Each participant has also committed to write an essay about what it means to be an Afro-Christian scholar from the perspective of his or her disciplines or experiences. These essays will be discussed and critiqued during the 2005 Consultation in preparation for a text on Afro-Christian scholarship.

This 2005 Consultation is the fourth of five annual consultations held at Calvin College.
