Bach the Preacher
April 10-12, 2003
A Symposium with insights from:
theology, musicology, performance, liturgy, & pedagogy
Sponsored by the Calvin
College Music Department, the Calvin
Institute of Christian Worship, the Artist
Series of Calvin College, the Grand Rapids Bach Festival, the H.
Henry Meeter Center for Calvin Studies, and the Seminars
in Christian Scholarship
Bach has often been called a preacher, and with good reason. His choral
works and organ chorales are marvels of musical rhetoric that interpret
the texts and bring them to life. This symposium will bring together internationally
known musicologists, performers, conductors, and theologians for lectures
and panel discussions that will address issues relating to meaning and
use of Bach's magnificent musical sermons. Sessions will also address
performance questions and the continuing role of Bach's music in the 21st
century.
The symposium will focus on a performance of St. Matthew Passion
by the world-renowned Bach Collegium Japan, conducted by Masaaki Suzuki,
and performances by the Calvin Alumni Choir under Pearl Shangkuan and
Calvin Capella under Joel Navarro.
Please note that some events are free, and open to the public. These
include the voice, piano, orchestra, and organ masterclasses, as well
as the open rehearsal with Masaaki Suzuki on Thursday afternoon; the pre-concert
public lecture on Thursday evening; and the two worship services featuring
the Calvin Alumni Choir and the Calvin Capella on Thursday evening and
Saturday morning. See the symposium schedule
for more information.
