Over the past couple of years, a handful of people from diverse training and backgrounds have been gathering monthly to see whether we could bypass the typical, individualistic way of listening to music--that is, forming a snap judgment about whether we like it or not. Instead, we explore ways to experience pieces through each others’ ears. Something rather profound occurs: as participants contribute, discuss and weigh various perspectives, a composite image emerges—one that is deeper, truer, and more nuanced than what any one person is able to hear on his or her own. We also learn a lot about each other. Monthly gatherings will continue during the 2011-2012 school year and all are welcome to attend.
