Beth Mitchell '63 recently moved to Chicago to help her daughter and son-in-law who were struggling to find a diagnosis for their ailing baby daughter, Haley. After months of research, doctor visits, and lengthy hospitalizations, Haley was diagnosed with Mitochondrial Complex IV, otherwise known as Cytochrome C Oxidase Deficiency (a genetic disorder affecting the respiratory chain) as well as a major seizure disorder. After being diagnosed with this rare, terminal disease, Haley's family has had limited help from mitochondrial specialists. If you have any knowledge regarding mitochondrial, Beth would be grateful to hear from you. She can be reached at or 215-886-2287. Haley's aunt Alyce Graham is a current Calvin student.

After many years as a middle school teacher and counselor, Frances Bulthuis '64 is a high school counselor with Pinellas County Schools in Largo, Fla.

David VerMerris '68 has returned to Western Michigan Christian High School in Muskegon, Mich., to serve as Principal. Dave had left WMCHS after 30 years of teaching chemistry and coaching soccer to work at Calvin where he was men's soccer coach and admissions coordinator of athletic recruitment.

James Hofman '68 is the new superintendent of Northern Michigan Christian School in McBain, Mich.

Martin Batts '65, professor of English and philosophy at LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, attended Oxbridge in Oxford, England, from July 14-20, 2002. The week was devoted to studying the life and legacy of author C.S. Lewis.

After 24 years of teaching at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, Gary Bouma '63 has been appointed deputy vice chancellor and vice president for research and development.

Carol Veenstra Kaiser '69 has retired from the Grand Rapids Public Schools after 32 years of teaching. She currently serves on the boards of Kent County (Mich.) Habitat for Humanity and Roosevelt Park Ministries. She leads Bible studies for Crown Financial Ministries each year and serves as a deacon at Roosevelt Park Community CRC.

Glen Wierenga ex'69 returned to Calvin and earned a teaching degree in 1999, attending at the same time as his daughters, Heather Wierenga Fackler '98 and Kristen Wierenga Hileman '00. He now is a teacher and assistant principal at West Michigan Christian High School, his alma mater. Mary Scott Wierenga '72 is an LPN at Orthopaedic Associates of Grand Rapids.
