After ten years as a legal secretary and another decade as a full time homemaker, Ellen Derby Gordon ex'70 now teaches family and consumer science at Colton High School in Etiwanda, Calif. She expects to finish her master's degree in education at CSU San Bernardino in May.

Sandy Van Voorthuysen Vander Zicht '71 was recently promoted from senior acquisitions editor to executive editor at Zondervan Publishing House. She also was elected executive director of The Academy of Christian Editors.

Timothy Van Laar '73 and his brother-in-law, Leonard Deipeveen '81, have co-authored the book Art With a Difference: Looking at Difficult and Unfamiliar Art (Mayfield Publishing Company, 2001). Tim, the program chair of painting in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has received a $20,000 fellowship from the George A. and Eliza Gardner Howard Foundation for his sabbatical project "Painted Sites: Digitally Structured Paintings." Tim's daughter, Elise Van Laar '01, represents the fourth generation of Van Laars to graduate from Calvin.

Don Lappinga '75 has received the John P. Steketee Child Welfare Advocate of the Year Award for 2001, presented annually to a Kent County (Mich.) child welfare worker who demonstrates great integrity, professionalism and dedication. For 16 years, he has been a social worker with D. A. Blodgett Services for Children and Families, where he is a supervisor for the Parent Therapist program and works with Big Brothers/Big Sisters and general foster care.
