Sidney Bangma '34 celebrated his 90th birthday in October at the Christian Health Care Center in Wyckoff, N.J. Sid was married to his beloved wife, Esther Houseman Bangma '32, for 50 years before her death in December of 1986. He taught math and science for 39 years at Eastern Christian High School (formerly Eastern Academy) and during that time received a number of fellowships from GE, Shell and the National Science Foundation for the purpose of assisting science teachers “help combat the critical shortage of scientists and engineers.” He received a Master of Science degree in mathematics from NYU in New York City. He was active in First Christian Reformed Church of Haledon for more than 50 years. His three children attended Calvin, as did 5 of his 13 grandchildren and at this point, 1 of his 12 great-grandchildren.

John Voss ‘49 recently wrote Desert Flower, a book described by the publisher as the story of “an American doctor working in Saudi Arabia [who] finds renewal of his Christian faith and his love for a stunning Moslem girl result in conflict and danger as the two cultures confront each other.” The story is based on John’s experiences while living in Saudi Arabia. It is available at Barnes & Noble.
