| Semester in China teaches valuable lessons | ||||
|
Calvin's inaugural Semester in China program began in September, 1999 and is held on the campus of Beijing Institute of Technology. This general area of Beijing is considered both a university district and a center for computer technology. The People's University is a few blocks from Beijing Institute of Technology and Beijing University is within a few kilometers. The street that runs by Beijing Institute of Technology was previously known as "computer street," especially to the north, and many of China's large information technology companies have their headquarters there. We study Chinese culture and history under Calvin Professor Kurt Selles and Chinese language through Beijing Institute of Technology's language program. We join about 200 other international students who are studying Chinese here. They come from Japan, Korea, Indonesia, the United States and various other places. In my opinion, it would be to everyone's benefit to live in another culture at least once in their lifetime, and not only for a short while, but long enough to begin to see things from that culture's perspective. It would open people's minds, teach them to enjoy their own culture more fully, and help prevent so many of the misunderstandings that lead to senseless wars.
