Peter Overvoorde named new Possibilities program coordinator
Peter Overvoorde
Pete Overvoorde, '97 Program coordinator for pre-college programs

As the new program coordinator for pre-college programs, Pete Overvoorde is excited about the "Possibilities."

"There are so many kids out there that deserve a chance," said Overvoorde, a 1997 Calvin graduate. "They just need a little help, a shove in the right direction. I'm really excited about doing that and making it fun too."

That's exactly what Calvin has been doing since 1997 in the "Pathways to Possibilities" program, which introduces 4th-12th graders to educational opportunities sponsored by Calvin.

Because of the grant funding, Overvoorde will be able to take over the programming details leaving pre-college programs director Rhae-Ann Booker more time to develop other aspects of the program.

Overvoorde will be involved with such educational events as "The Joys of Writing," in which youngsters will get a change to produce a newspaper story with a Grand Rapids Press reporter, "Exploring One's Genealogy" and "Life-size Board Games," in which students are forced to make choices in a game that will then demonstrate consequences of those choices.

Overvoorde, who graduated with a degree in therapeutic recreation and went on to earn a master's degree in kinesiology from Indiana University, enjoys working with youth, he said.

"This is about increasing their educational awareness so they can realize their potential," said Overvoorde. "That is something that is really worth the effort."
