Senior Michael Holwerda named MIAA Zuidema Award winner

Michael HolwerdaThis past fall, Calvin College senior Michael Holwerda was named the MIAA recipient of the prestigious Dr. Marvin Zuidema Award in men’s soccer.

The Zuidema Award honors Dr. Marvin Zuidema, longtime men’s soccer coach and athletic administrator at Calvin College. The recipient is a senior selected for his contributions to team play, leadership qualities, demonstration of ethical virtues, and excellence in athletics and academics. Holwerda is the third player from Calvin to receive the honor and the second from his family as his older brother David Holwerda was the 2006 recipient.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Michael Holwerda was a four-year member of the Calvin men’s soccer program. Holwerda had career totals of 23 goals, 18 assists and 65 points. He also had 11 game-winning goals in his career. Holwerda carried a double major in religion and psychology. He was a regular member of the Calvin Dean’s List and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. This fall, he was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team. He was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team in 2008. A fifth-year senior at Calvin this fall, Holwerda graduated in December and will be moving to Akron, Ohio, to work at a local church while continuing courses at a seminary nearby.
