Becky Rietema makes adjustments for collegiate golf
By Jeff Febus

After two years of collegiate competition, Calvin sophomore Becky Rietema is beginning to feel her rhythm on the golf course and with it, she hopes to improve the overall rhythm of the Calvin women's golf team.

After not breaking a round of 110 her freshman year, Rietema accomplished the feat four times this past fall including a career-best round of 95 in the sixth MIAA outing of the year. Rietema's performance at the sixth league outing helped Calvin to its best team finish of the year as the Knights took sixth place with a season-best score of 400 strokes.

"Our goal was to get to 400 so when we accomplished that, we were pretty excited," said Rietema. "We'd like to keep improving next year and lower our scores."

Rietema would also like to lower her individual score. As a sophomore this year, she finished 30th in the final MIAA individual standings and second on the Calvin team with an average of 108.0 strokes-per-round.

"I need to continue working on all aspects of my game," she said. "First and foremost, I need to continue to work on my putting."

A Grand Rapids Christian High School graduate, Rietema did not take up the game until the spring of her freshman year of high school after getting cut from the school's softball team. She continued to play four years of high school golf but admitted that the jump to the collegiate level took a bit of adjusting.

"Playing at the college level is definitely more competitive than in high school," said Rietema who is majoring in secondary education with an emphasis in biology and a minor in psychology "You also have to balance your schedule between classes and golf. It's taken some time to adjust but I feel pretty comfortable with it now."

With busy schedules during the MIAA season in the fall, the players on the team do not always have much time to get to know each other apart from the golf course. An annual spring break golf trip to Gulf Shores, Alabama, helps the team to get to know each other and improve their golf skills.

"We really look forward to our spring trip," said Rietema. "We get to know each other more on the ride down south and then we get to play a lot of golf on nice courses in warm weather."

As a team, Calvin finished seventh in the eight-team MIAA women's golf standings this fall. With four of their top-five players returning next year, Rietema is optimistic about next fall and is also looking forward to stepping into a leadership role as an upperclassman. "We feel good about our team coming back," she said. "We should have four or five good players back with experience so that will help. It will be good to be in a little bit more of a leadership role next year. It should be fun."
