Calvin repeats as national champion in two women's track events
Both Calvin track and field teams had strong showings at the NCAA III Championships as the Calvin women crowned a pair of repeat national champions and took fifth with 30 points while the Calvin men took ninth with 28.5 points.

In the women's competition, Calvin was powered by the speedy legs of junior Megan Pierce of Fort Wayne, Indiana who repeated as national champion in the 400 meters with a school record time of 53.97, earning her third consecutive All-America berth in the event as she finished sixth in 1998. Her winning time of 53.97 is the second fastest time in Division III women's track and field history. Pierce also anchored Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team to its second consecutive national championship as it cruised in with a school-record time of 3:44.60, finishing nearly five seconds ahead of second place Wheaton (Mass.). Joining Pierce on the relay were sophomore Mindy Worst (Grand Rapids), junior Sara Veltkamp (Grand Rapids) and sophomore Lindsay Mulder (Wyoming, Mich.). Veltkamp and Mulder were both members of Calvin's national championship relay team in 1999 while Worst was making her national debut.

"I was nervous in the morning but once I got out to the track and started warming up, I felt more relaxed," said Pierce. "We had more than 200 Calvin fans here cheering us on and that helped a whole lot. It's wonderful to win another pair of national championships. I'd like to do it one more time and go for the Division III record in both events."

Calvin women's track and field coach Ralph Honderd was extremely pleased with his team's performance. "I have to give a lot of credit to our athletes," said Honderd. "They were very focused and ready to go. We were hoping to finish in the top five as a team and we did that which was also very pleasing. We have a terrific group of people associated with both of our teams and they represent Calvin College extremely well."

The fifth-place team finish by the Calvin women was its sixth top-10 national finish including its fourth in the last eight years.
