Women's golf struggles in 1999- - looks for improvement
By Jeff Febus

After a ninth-place finish in the MIAA standings this fall, the women's golf team has nowhere to go but up in the standings. Head coach Ralph Honderd intends to take the team in that direction next year.

The 1999 season proved to be a struggle for Honderd's crew as his original roster of 12 had shrunk to the minimum four golfers by season's end due to illness and time commitments.

"We had a little bit of a rough season with numbers but the enthusiasm remained high," said Honderd. "We certainly have room to improve and I think we will do that."

Honderd's team returns all four golfers who finished the season, led by junior Alyssa Bruinsma who finished 26th in the final MIAA individual standings with an average of 102.7 strokes-per-round and was the only Calvin golfer to fire sub-100 rounds this fall posting scores of 96 and 98 during the first two league outings of the year. Other returnees include junior Jill Scott and freshmen Mo Stokely and Becky Rietema.

Calvin's team will get a head start for next fall when it journeys south during spring break where it will compete in a number of invitationals. "Our spring trip is very positive for our program," said Honderd. "It gives our players a chance to hone their skills on some challenging courses."

Honderd also believes that Calvin's home course - the Thornapple Pointe Golf Club - is a bonus for his program. Located on the banks of the Thornapple River, the course is unrivaled throughout the league for its beauty and is also one of the most challenging in the MIAA circuit.

"We have a wonderful course and we are thrilled that we will be returning to Thornapple Pointe next year," said Honderd. "I don't know of too many courses at the small college level that can match up to it."

Meanwhile, Honderd is working hard on the recruiting trail. "We're working on getting more players into our program," Honderd. "If we can add a few more players, I feel we can definitely make a move up the league standings."
