Elective Courses

In addition to the required courses, students must select 4 200- or 300-level advisor-approved elective courses (12 – 15 hours) of which two must be 300-level courses.  The courses selected must deepen student learning in one of the key areas of instruction. Depending on your area(s) of interest, you can select related courses to broaden and deepen your experience.

  • If you are interested in the science emphasis of public health, you may choose additional coursework in biology and/or chemistry.
  • If you are interested in biostatistics, you may choose additional course work in mathematics or computer science (e.g. health informatics).
  • If you are interested in the policy emphasis of public health, you may choose additional coursework in political science and/or economics.
  • If you are interested in public health across the lifespan, you may choose additional work in social work, sociology, or psychology.
  • If you are interested in global issues related to public health, you may choose additional course work in political science or IDS.
  • If you are interested in environmental aspects of public health, you may choose additional coursework in environmental studies.
  • If you are interested in health care administration, you may choose additional course work in economics or business.  In short, there is room, by intention, for creativity and flexibility in this major.
