Going With the Flow
Becky discovered a passion for nursing—and a deep conviction that God was directing her to pediatric oncology—during her freshman year of college. But the college she was attending didn't offer her newfound vocation, so a leap of faith brought Becky to Calvin. She quickly applied to the nursing program.
"I didn't get in," she laughs.
Ouch.
"No," she says, "it was a God thing!"
At the time Becky was devastated, but her parents reminded her, "God has a plan!"
With her nursing plans curtailed mid-way through her sophomore year, Becky did what her yen for adventure demanded—she hopped on a boat.
On an Operation Mobilization ministry boat, Becky joined 352 Christians from 48 countries visiting various ports in the Middle East. In each port, she and her teammates ministered to other Christians in any way they could—bringing with them nothing but hope and faith. For their food and other supplies they depended on donations. "We had to be 100% dependent on God," says Becky.
While on the boat, Becky got word that she had been accepted to Calvin’s nursing program.
"I was so excited," says Becky, "and yet I knew that it was good that I hadn't been accepted right away. I learned so much from the people I met during my time away—like being honest in my relationships, and having to truly rely on God.”
As for the unconventional route to nursing that saw her board a ship for the Middle East, Becky says, "If I hadn't had that, I'm not sure I'd be who I am today."
"I'm struggling with where God will take me next," Becky says, though her sparkling eyes don't show it, "but I'm laughing because I’ll look back in 5 months and it will be 'duh, God had a plan.'"
