Travel Advice for Thanksgiving Recess

Car traveling though snow stormWhile the Thanksgiving recess (U.S.) offers a brief break from classes, the college does not consider this to be a time when students should travel substantial distances. Thanksgiving comes just before the end of the semester, at a time when students need to complete their assignments and prepare for exams. In only a few short weeks students will have time to enjoy the longer, more leisurely Christmas break.

The weather can turn severe quickly in the Upper Midwest in late November, so students who attempt to travel home over great distances may be risking their safety. Longer road trips and airline flights during these shorter breaks are not recommended, as they tax the physical endurance of students and put them at the mercy of the weather. The college urges students and parents to discourage long trips during the Thanksgiving break. Students whose homes are outside of a few hours’ drive from campus are advised to spend the holiday with friends who live closer to the college.

As a community, we do our best to enfold long-distance students in holiday celebrations. Many faculty members invite students to join their family gatherings. Local students have historically extended the hospitality of their homes in a newfound appreciation of their own family’s traditions. Although this can not replace the students’ family and customs, we do hope they help students feel a part of our extended Calvin family.
