A Message to Parents of Prospective Calvin Students

Congratulations, Parent!

Welcome to the Parent & Family Resources section of the Calvin web site. Use this site as a portal to explore the opportunities available at Calvin College from the parent perspective.

Your family is in the midst of a college search – and you play an important role in your student's college decision-making process. To assist you in this process let me introduce you to a helpful Web resource, "Choosing a College." As one who has walked through this process with students and parents for the past 25 years, let me also share three tips that are crucial as your student turns to you to seek advice and support.

Student Portrait1. First, enable your student to see the importance of a proper goal for education. The Christ-centered education that is characteristic of Calvin shapes one’s way of looking at life and the world. It helps students to develop habits of knowing and doing, which give direction for a lifetime. Its hallmark is equipping students to actively participate in the renewing of all things – a perspective that directs life choices in biblical ways.

2. Second, seek a broad education – not technical training alone. Our future leaders will be those who have learned to learn, who have a broad understanding of God’s world and their place in it, who understand that in addition to seeking knowledge and developing skills we are also called to be people of character.

3. Finally, be in prayer about the decision that your student will make and urge that this decision be made prayerfully. Wherever God leads your student, He will provide in mighty ways. We will be praying with you and hope you will allow us to help in the process of discerning whether Calvin is the right place for your student to grow in wisdom and spirit.

I also invite you to review an essay, Educating for Shalom, written by Dr. Cornelius Plantinga, former Dean of the Chapel at Calvin College, which addresses Calvin’s broader understanding of education-in-Christ.

God's blessings to you and your student as you seek His will in this college search!

Sincerely,

Dale Kuiper
