If you were on campus recently, perhaps you got the opportunity to meet President Le Roy. During Family Weekend, he met with parents and families during the tailgating dinner. He answered a variety of questions—on college finances, online learning, teaching students to be “in-the-world” but not “of-the-world,” retention of students, the spiritual environment at Calvin and much more—at a town hall meeting Saturday. Find out about a telephone town hall coming up soon, too!

- Take a survey, please, if you were here (which helps us plan for 2014).
For this and next year, Thanksgiving break will begin on Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and run through the weekend. (See the dates in the Parent Calendar below.) This is the first year of a two-year experiment with no classes on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving (also true for Easter Monday), allowing students a travel day. The academic division will be evaluating how this affects class attendance surrounding these breaks. Please encourage your student(s) to participate in classes until Thanksgiving break officially begins or as soon as classes resume. Thank you!
If you have questions or comments, please send them to firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll make sure they get directed to the appropriate department. See the full Academic Calendar for this and next year. More information about Thanksgiving below...
Apple deadline TODAY
Student Treats are a fun and easy way to let your student know, throughout the year, that you are thinking of them. With the chance to write a personal note on each treat, they will feel—and sometimes taste—the love!
Our next order deadline is for the Gourmet Apple Treat ($15) today, Tuesday, October 29, 2013; apples will be delivered November 4. These gourmet apples are tart, juicy apples hand-dipped in layers of finest chocolate and creamy caramel. They weight 1.5 to 2 pounds each! There are three flavor choices: supreme, butter brickle and no nuts. Find out more and order now »
Thanksgiving rides, meals
If your student is looking to offer or find a ride home for Thanksgiving, he or she should post that information in Portal, the comprehensive site for all of Calvin online accounts and services. Dining hall hours for Thanksgiving break will be available soon. The residence halls are open during Thanksgiving break.
The dining halls will have a celebratory Thanksgiving Buffet in mid-November. Your off-campus or Knollcrest East student will also enjoy this meal if they have the Community Dining Plan.
Fall sports season ending...
As we near the end of the fall sports season, watch/listen to live contests (and/or tournaments) as they are made available from the Sports homepage (links in upper right corner).
Or follow the Knights from your inbox with the daily Calvin Sports Report (CSR), an e-mail bulletin for game summaries and statistics, top performances, honors and honorees, rankings and previews. Your e-mail address will be kept private for CSR use, only. Find out more and subscribe or manage your subscription here.
Health services will be hosting a flu clinic today, October 22 (9 a.m. until 3 p.m.). There will be another on October 31 (time TBA). Read more about Influenza and the Flu Vaccine from health services. We are now able to bill insurance companies; we need the insurance card and the birth date of the primary cardholder. Patients may also pay with cash, check or bill their service to a misc. account (current Calvin students only). Flu Shot $25, Flu Mist $30. Health Services is located in the Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center; their main entrance is on the west side of the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex.
Please note: If students are planning to travel with a Calvin group, the flu vaccine is required!
Recommend One & Give Your Five
We ask all alumni/parents to do two things: Recommend One and Give Your Five.
We’re talking about encouraging a high school junior or senior who would benefit from Calvin's "heart and mind" education (the “One”) and making a small gift to Calvin to work toward 100% alumni participation, boosting Calvin's standings for select grants and college rankings (the “Five”).
