Here are some events especially for families:

Family Weekend Tailgate Dinner (tickets required)

Friday, 5:30 p.m., Huizenga Tennis & Track Center

Last year almost 400 participants kicked off their weekend with the Tailgate Dinner. The atmosphere is casual, providing plenty of time to talk with your student over a meal. There will be games, a photo booth and other activities. President Le Roy and his wife, Andrea, will be on hand to meet you, too. Encourage your student to bring friends, too—especially those without visiting families! Tickets required: $10 adults, $5 children 12 & under, free* for Calvin students who register by October 10.

* Calvin students are free only with our online registration (with ID number provided) by October 10. Late registrations will be $10 for all participants. The costs for this event have been subsidized by the Student Treats program.

Student Improv (tickets required)

Friday & Saturday, 8 p.m., Lab Theater, Spoelhof Center

Our student improv team will have you laughing as they use audience suggestions for skits in this one-hour show. Tickets required (including for Calvin students): $5 general admission. These show will sell out! (Note: River City Improv, our alumni improv team, is also performing this weekend. Please note the difference on the ticket order form.)

Calvin Music Festival (tickets required)

Friday & Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Covenant Fine Arts Center

This collage-style concert includes all eight music ensembles at Calvin. Tickets are $15 adults, $5 students for the Festival performance. In addition, there will be several “Spotlight” performances by smaller ensembles throughout the building from 6:30-7:15 p.m. These Spotlight performances are free but do require advance tickets available on our online registration.

Party at the Prez's

Friday, 7 p.m., Seminary Pond Lawn

The campus involvement and leadership office presents a “Buck Fridays” program with an evening of activities by the Sem Pond. The Calvin chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers will kick things off with a Cardboard Canoe Race beginning at 7 p.m., then Fierljeppen (a Dutch sport that involves pole vaulting over a body of water). Later in the evening, the movie “Despicable Me 2” will be shown on a giant screen on the lawn. Throughout the evening there will be campfires and s’more supplies provided. All of this is available for the awesome “Buck Fridays” rate: $1/person (cash only, paid at the event). Families invited!

Family Climbing, Swimming, Intramurals

The Climbing Wall will be open on Friday (4-6 p.m.) and Saturday, (9-10:30 a.m., 10:30-Noon, Noon-1:30 p.m.). Registrations for 20 participants will be taken in advance for each time slot at parents@calvin.edu. Send your preferred time and the names/ages of all climbers. In addition, the Venema Aquatic Center will be hosting open swim on Friday (6-9 p.m.) and Saturday (9-10:30 a.m.).

There will also be 3-on-3 basketball and 6-on-6 volleyball intramural tournaments in the Fieldhouse on Saturday (9 a.m. to noon). Family members are welcome to participate; sign-ups will be Saturday morning at the Fieldhouse.

Town Hall with President Le Roy

Saturday, 10:30 a.m., Covenant Fine Arts Center Recital Hall

This is your chance to hear from Calvin’s president as he shares a bit about the college’s strategic planning process and Calvin’s place in the ever-changing world of higher education. There will be generous time for you to ask him your questions, too!

Athletics

Cheer on the Knights! Friday: men's lacrosse (5:30 p.m.) and hockey (7 p.m.). Saturday: women’s soccer (12 p.m.), swim relays (1 p.m.), men’s soccer (2:30 p.m.), alumni hockey (3:30 p.m.), men’s lacrosse vs. alumni (4 p.m.) and hockey (8:30 p.m.).

Ice Cream Sundae Social

Saturday, 9 p.m., Johnny’s Café

Wrap up your Saturday evening with free ice cream sundaes, compliments of the Student Treats program.

Fridays at Calvin

Have a high school student coming with you? They can register for a Fridays at Calvin visit.

LOFT (Living our Faith Together)

We conclude our weekend with a LOFT worship service—moved to the morning so families can worship together. Pastor Mary will be preaching a message which is part of our Exodus fall Bible study series. Brunch will be available in the Commons Dining Hall ($7 adults, $4 ages 12 & under, cash/check only at the door) before you head home.

There are many additional free activities available this weekend, including tours of the art gallery and Dice Mineralogical Museum, star-gazing at the observatory, class visits, and nature walks and children’s activities at the Bunker Interpretive Center…there is something for everyone!
