Calvin-Parents E-Newsletter: November 27, 2012

We hope you enjoyed a safe and blessed Thanksgiving.

The 2013-2014 Academic Calendar is now available. Please note that Thanksgiving Wednesday (in 2013) and Easter Monday (in 2014) will be no-class days. The college will remain open, but there will be no classes. These changes are in response to requests from the Student Senate and the Parent Council, and will be implemented on a trial basis for two years beginning with the 2013-2014 school year.

Treat deadline today!

Parents may send their student some "love" by having the parent relations team deliver a Student Treat to them during the school year. There are birthday, exam, holiday and special event treats to send for on- or off-campus students.

The next treat deadline is today, November 27, for the Winter Exam treat ($20); delivery will be December 5. This travel tote (new!) is a great gift for students heading home for the holidays or away for interim. The winter exam treat includes a variety of snacks to get your student through "crunch time."

Order online now. You may also call Jen at (616) 526-6142, e-mail parents@calvin.edu or fax (616) 526-7069. Thank you!

Christmas shopping on campus

Don't forget about Christmas at the Campus Store on Saturday, December 1. Proceeds from each purchase fund scholarships for Calvin-bound high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding service. Sale highlights include 15% off all books (except textbooks), Christmas ornaments, sweatshirts, scarves and winter hats. There will be giveaways, book signings, refreshments and complimentary gift bagging.

Messiah

Ninety-two years ago, the Calvin Oratorio Society made its debut with the first of its annual performances of Handel's Messiah. If you are in the area or on campus this weekend, consider experiencing the tradition with them Friday, November 30, or Saturday, December 1, at 8 p.m. Families may also enjoy listening to that Messiah performance at holiday gatherings by tuning in the radio broadcast that will begin to air around the country starting in mid-December. See the Oratorio Society site to purchase tickets and for complete broadcast information.

Service-learning gift idea

Service-Learning Spring Break trips are now available. These trips are aimed at promoting the education and personal growth of participating students. Some students develop long-term relationships with their spring break partnering organization, while others develop a new personal interest. Encourage your students to consider the possibility for March 2013. Applications received by December 14 will be entered in a drawing to go on a trip for free (minus the cost of the initial deposit). Spring break trips would also make a great gift for any student! Complete trip information is found on Service-Learning Center site.

Give the gift of food

Calvin is again offering the Community Dining Plan for off-campus students and residents of Knollcrest East and Timmer Studio apartments. The affordable and flexible options for meals encourages upperclass students to eat on campus regularly to enrich the community.

Worship symposium

The Calvin Symposium on Worship brings  together a wide audience of pastors, worship leaders and planners, artists, musicians, scholars, students and other interested worshipers every January. People come from around the world to gather for a time of fellowship, worship and learning together. Over 100 presenters and panelists will participate with1,500 guests from 30-plus countries. The cost of this conference is just $15 per day for students; consider attending with your student! Online registration is open now.
