Special edition: Family Weekend invitation

We invite you to join us on campus October 19-21, 2012, for Family Weekend, which includes Homecoming and class reunions, as well as the inauguration of Calvin's president, Dr. Michael K. Le Roy!

Here are some highlights for families:

Family Weekend Tailgate

This will be a casual dinner with plenty of time for conversation. The menu includes pulled-pork sandwiches, chicken wings, fresh veggies and fruit, redskin potato salad, apple cole slaw, vegetarian chili and hot apple cobbler. There will be a photo booth, games, activities and prizes. $10; $5 for children 12 & under; free for Calvin students that register (on the same page where parents register) before October 15 (or parents, include them on your registration). Encourage your student to bring their roommate(s) and suitemate(s)---especially those without visiting families!

Student Improv

Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m., Lab Theater, Spoelhof Center
Our student improv team will have you laughing as they use audience suggestions for skits. General admission, $5; Calvin students need a ticket, too. These shows will sell out—get your tickets soon! (Note: River City Improv, our alumni improv team, is also performing for alumni on Friday night. Please note this difference on the ticket order form.)

Calvin Music Festival

Friday and Saturday, 7:30 p.m., Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium
All Calvin music ensembles perform in this marvelous collage-style concert. There will also be some small student groups performing throughout the building at 6:30 p.m. $15 adults; $5 students.

Ice Cream Social/Inaugural Celebration

Friday, 9 p.m., Johnny’s and the Campus Store
Wrap up your day with free ice cream sundaes. Stop by after the Calvin Music  Festival or Student Improv, come before or after visiting the Calvin observatory or residence halls—whenever you come, enjoy this treat compliments of the parent relations office.

Saturday, 9 p.m., Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex
Enjoy the Campus Inaugural Celebration with us, which is sure to include food, music and fun! Details still being finalized.

Inauguration of Michael K. Le Roy, Ph.D.

Saturday, 2 p.m., Van Noord Arena
All members of the extended Calvin community are encouraged to join us for this special ceremony. Most other facilities on campus will be closed during the inauguration to allow as many students, faculty and staff to attend as possible. No advance tickets are required.

Climbing Wall/Athletics

Friday, 4-6 p.m.; Saturday, 9-10:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m., 12-1:30 p.m.
Registrations for 20 students/parents/siblings will be taken in advance for each time slot. To sign up, e-mail with your preferred time slot and the names and ages of all who will be climbing. Walk-up participants will be taken as space and staffing allow.

Cheer for the Knights at the MIAA swimming relays (Friday, 6 p.m.), men’s soccer vs. Hope (Saturday, noon), women’s soccer vs. St. Mary’s (Saturday, 2:30 p.m.) and hockey vs. Kettering (Saturday, 8 p.m., off-campus).

Special Presentations

Political science professor Doug Koopman will speak on the 2012 elections at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Meeter Center Lecture Hall and January Series director Kristi Potter will give a preview of the January Series at 11 a.m. Saturday in the campus store book section.

Fridays at Calvin

Have a high school student coming with you? They can register for a Fridays at Calvin visit.

LOFT (Living Our Faith Together)

Sunday, 11 a.m., Covenant Fine Arts Center
We’ve moved our Sunday evening campus worship service to the morning for this special weekend. Pastor Mary Hulst will be preaching on Matthew 6:25-34 and “Do Not Worry” as part of our Sermon on the Mount study, and we will be celebrating communion. Brunch will be available after LOFT for $7/person in the Commons Dining Hall (cash/check only, pay at the door) before you head home.
