Calvin-Parents E-Newsletter: April 9, 2013

Since 2008, 14 Calvin students have been named Goldwater Scholars. During that six-year stretch, no other liberal arts college in the United States has had more than 11. For 2013, Calvin finds itself on a short list of colleges and universities that have three recognized scholars (plus a fourth receiving honorable mention status!), which includes the likes of Harvard, John Hopkins University and University of Michigan, to name a few.

Chemistry professor Carolyn Anderson, who also serves as the college’s liaison with the Goldwater Foundation, said: “It’s a testament to the work the faculty does, the level of students we have, and of how integral they are to what we do. It’s nice to see them get the recognition they deserve.” Professor Anderson was recently awarded a three-year $230, 000 research grant from The National Science Foundation.

Student service

A northwest emergency food center, Supper House, is one place Calvin nurses are learning about healthcare. For years, Calvin student nurses have done practicum work in area neighborhoods. Recently Calvin was named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement. This is Calvin’s second time being so honored.

Treats available anytime

Does your student need a little love from home? Consider sending them something from the Student Treat program, such as the Study Break, Pizza, Hugs From Home, or Birthday Treat. There's also a Spring Exam Treat that will include a large Calvin laundry bag perfect for transporting belongings home for the summer—or to actually tote laundry!

Order online anytime. You may also call Jen at (616) 526-6142, e-mail or fax (616) 526-7069. The last day for ordering anything this year is April 30, 2013. Thank you for your support of the student treat program!

Alumni and friends: Pasadena, Detroit...

In addition to major campus events coming up, there are events for alumni, friends and families all over the country (see calendars below) to which you are always invited!

One that is planned for this Saturday, April 13 is in Pasadena, California. Three Calvin staffers will be meeting at a restaurant, sharing marketing and branding ideas they're working on, and giving you updates from the college. Will you join them?

Bring children of all ages to the Michigan Science Center in Detroit next Saturday, April 20!

And if you haven't signed up for the Calvin 5k Spring Classic presented by Aspen Investment Management Inc. on April 27, there's still time. Even if you don't plan to run or walk, you can volunteer. Join us!

Law alumni, other career help

Alumni attorneys opened the profession of law to students during a recent interim course. In all, 31 alumni attorneys—from numerous fields of law—spent time with the class, interspersed with readings and discussions about the law and the practice of law from a Christian perspective.

Graduation is a major accomplishment for your student, but it’s also a major life change. The career development office is here to help with the transition! Career counselors are available to guide your son or daughter through the job search process, assist with resumes and cover letters, refine interview skills, and more. Students can call 616-526-6485, e-mail, or stop by the career development office (372 Hekman Library) to set up an appointment. Find out more on Facebook!

Academic advising

Academic Advising will be on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 23 and 24, 2013. There are no classes those days so that professors are available to meet with their advisees. Students are instructed to meet with their advisor during this time (per faculty schedule) and prepare for registration. In fact, students must meet with their assigned advisor in order to be cleared for registration.

Please do all you can to encourage your student to take full advantage of academic advising. If they have multiple advisors for different majors/programs, please encourage them to meet them all. In addition to meeting with an advisor, academic advising days are a good time to get caught up on reading assignments, writing papers, or visit the registrar's office for questions about graduation plans. It should not be a time to leave campus for a long weekend getaway. Here is more information about academic advising services. You may also contact Dana Hebreard (

Nursing pin

Dear Parents/Grandparents of Nursing Students,

The 2013 Nursing Pinning Ceremony, Thursday, May 16, is a tradition when all graduating nursing students, along with their family and friends, join together to celebrate receiving a Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN). In this ceremony, each student is traditionally and proudly “pinned” with Calvin’s own nursing pin, as a special signature of completing a baccalaureate degree in nursing and being eligible to take the state RN licensure examination.

Perhaps you would like to purchase a nursing pin for your son, daughter or grandchild? Receiving a nursing pin is not required, but it's a special and proud moment for the nursing student at the Pinning Ceremony.

Although your presence and support is most important, please consider sharing in this special day with the gift of a Calvin nursing pin. We are looking forward to celebrating with you in May!
