This weekend was a busy one on campus. Watch the president jump into the icy waters of the Sem Pond, and read more about Professor Bratt, recipient of the Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching, the highest teaching award bestowed on a faculty member.


Rangeela is the annual showcase organized by Calvin's international students celebrating various cultures through song, dance and skits. Rangeela 2013 is February 22 & 23 at 8 p.m., and tickets ($8 general admission, $5 students) are available through the Calvin Box Office (616-526-6282, If you are unable to get tickets---they typically sell out every year, or if you are unable to be on campus, you can watch Rangeela LIVE. Please note: the broadcast will not be recorded due to licensing restrictions.

Parent Council

The Calvin Parent Council will be meeting this coming Friday, the 22nd, and as part of its schedule will interact with President Le Roy. Do you have any questions or topics you'd like the council to mention to the president? If so, send them on to and they will be given to the council co-chairs, Ray and Rose Koopman of Naperville, Ill. The council brings a "parent's view" to conversations with Calvin faculty and staff twice a year.

Career help

Are you the parent of a senior student?  Are you concerned about your son or daughter obtaining an entry-level position in the midst of today’s competitive job market?  Encourage your student to visit the career development office. Career counselors are available to assist students develop a job search plan, create a resume, and practice interviewing skills. Siblings Weekend

Siblings Weekend is THIS weekend: February 22–24. It's a weekend of fun for siblings, cousins, young friends, and other school-aged guests who come to visit a Calvin student! Of course guests can visit anytime, but Siblings Weekend is geared for kids. All meals are included in the registration, and a variety of events and opportunities are available. Register now!

January Series archives available

The 2013 January Series is now part of the series archives. Many of the presentations from this year—and other years, are available online. Start by going to the January Series page, search for the speaker you'd like to hear, and click on the link. Many topics have been covered over the years; try the archive of Eric Metaxas who spoke about: "Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy."

1098T, taxes, scholarships

The electronic version of the 2012 IRS tuition tax form 1098T and a supplement are available to students via their Portal accounts on the Student Accounts & Finances page listed under the Services tab. The paper version of these documents will be mailed out to students' home address no later than January 30th. Any non-tax questions regarding these forms can be directed to the Student Accounts Office at (616) 526-6127 or

Are you planning to apply for financial aid for your son or daughter for 2013-2014? If so, now is the time to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for maximum consideration. Even if you will not have your tax return finished it's more important to submit the FAFSA by March 1st (using estimates) than to wait until your tax return is completed. If you have special circumstances to present to the financial aid office, be sure to submit a Calvin supplemental aid form in addition to the FAFSA.

And don't forget about available scholarships; look for these with the online search tool. The application for most of these scholarships is March 1, 2013.
