Calvin-Parents E-Newsletter: January 29, 2013

Spring semester started on Monday, but the official kickoff to the semester is Wednesday, January 30, with spring convocation, or ReGathering 2013. Sing, pray and listen in on a conversation with President Michael K. Le Roy, Ph.D. and Chaplain Mary Hulst on global travel and Christian faith. Watch the live video stream for ReGathering here.

Treat deadline next week

(The Valentine Treat is included in the Year of Treats.) The order deadline is Thursday, February 7, 2013, and this gift will be delivered on Thursday, February 14. Alumni Choir

The Calvin Alumni Choir, whose members are alumni of Calvin, has been established to organize, promote, and sponsor a choir of the highest musical caliber. Through their performances, this choir will promote an awareness of and appreciation for the Christian faith, for choral music, both sacred and secular, and for Calvin.

Continuing to use the musical gifts that the Lord has given them, the singers of the Calvin Alumni Choir believe that: "When in our music God is glorified,
And adoration leaves no room for pride, It is as though the whole creation cried: Alleluia!" — F.P. Green

They have upcoming concerts on January 27 (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and February 17 (Grand Haven, Mich.). See their full concert schedule.

Rivalry:  February 9

Gather with alumni, friends and family for the rivalry game on February 9! The Rivalry, which features the men's varsity game, finds Calvin and Hope fans gathering at viewing locations all over the country to enthusiastically cheer on their team. Take the whole family; there will be over 80 sites from which to choose!

Student faith conference

The eighth annual Faith and International Development Conference is January 31–February 2. The planning and organizing of the conference is student-led, although essential support comes from other members of the Calvin community. Participation in the conference has grown to over 600 students, faculty leaders, and organization representatives. Read the recent story: "Students prep for Faith and International Development Conference."

uKnight Week

Students will be celebrating uKnight Week, Calvin’s winter “spirit week,” February 9-16, 2013. The festivities include the annual Cold Knight Club: Sem Pond Jump, campus activities, performances, Wear Calvin Day (for everyone, anywhere), Senior Salute, Ambassadors Lunch honoring Outstanding Service Award recipient Ron Baylor (from Kalamazoo, Mich.), and Faith and Learning Award recipient Dr. Randal Jelks (former Calvin history professor), AirBand, sporting events and more.

1098T, taxes, scholarships

The electronic version of the 2012 IRS tuition tax form 1098T and a supplement are available to students via their Portal accounts on the Student Accounts & Finances page listed under the Services tab. The paper version of these documents will be mailed out to students' home address no later than January 30th. Any non-tax questions regarding these forms can be directed to the Student Accounts Office at (616) 526-6127 or studentaccounts@calvin.edu.

Are you planning to apply for financial aid for your son or daughter for 2013-2014? If so, now is the time to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for maximum consideration. Even if you will not have your tax return finished it's more important to submit the FAFSA by March 1st (using estimates) than to wait until your tax return is completed. If you have special circumstances to present to the financial aid office, be sure to submit a Calvin supplemental aid form in addition to the FAFSA.
More information: financial aid officefinaid@calvin.edu (800-688-0122).

And don't forget about available scholarships; look for these with the online search tool. The application for most of these scholarships is March 1, 2013.
