The Calvin Parent Council, led by co-chairs Ray and Rose Koopman (Batavia, Ill.) met last week during Siblings Weekend. The Council learned about the work of the Congregational and Ministry Studies Department and Calvin's off-campus programs, providing parent perspectives to these program leaders. The council also met with admissions counselors in preparation for making connections with parents of prospective students.
The Parent Council serves as a key leadership board to engage Calvin parents in constructive dialogue and activity. Thank you to the 16 Calvin families who represent Calvin parents in this forum!
There are several alumni and friends (and that includes parents/families) events coming up, including the Gloryland CD release concert (Feb. 29), River City Improv in the Pacific Northwest area (Mar. 8-10), an Economics Alumni Conference (Apr. 13 & 14), the annual Calvin 5k Spring Classic (Apr. 28), and the 50-Year Class of 1962 Reunion (May 18 & 19).

Many student music ensembles will be on tour this spring. See the complete tour list, which includes the Orchestra to Florida during spring break (March 16-25), Women's Chorale to Indiana and Wisconsin (March 30-April 1), Gospel Choir to Chicago (April 20-22) and the Wind Ensemble to Hungary, Ukraine and Romania (May 21-June 4).
Details for service-learning trips are being finalized and many students will be part of a long tradition of work trips sponsored by the Service-Learning Center. See a complete list of the trips planned for Spring Break 2012.
Last year students served in record numbers.
Men's and women's sports teams will be traveling for spring break. Baseball and softball will be in Tucson, Arizona; tennis will be in Orlando, Florida; and track and field will be stopping for a meet in Tennessee on the way to their training in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Calvin extends its commitment to faith and learning during the summer months by offering a variety of camps for children ages four–18. Visit calvin.edu/go/camps to explore dozens of options for your camper.
Other summer opportunities include the Entrada Scholars Program, an academic achievement program for 11th and 12th grade North American minority students; and Summer Academy, an academic immersion program for U.S. and international 10th–12th graders. (New: upon successful completion of the Summer Academy, receive a Summer Academy Grant toward Calvin tuition upon full-time enrollment as a college student.)

Encourage your student to visit the career development office. Career counselors are available to assist students develop a job search plan, create a resume, and practice interviewing skills. Scholarships: Students can access an online search tool and apply via Calvin Portal: Services>Scholarships and Financial Aid>Upperclass Named Scholarship Application.
Financial Aid: Parents can fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid by March 1st (using estimates). If you have special circumstances, submit a Calvin supplemental aid form in addition to the FAFSA.

Health insurance: Students may enroll in or waive out of the KnightCare student healthcare insurance plan for the 2012-2013 academic year. Please encourage your student to submit his or her insurance waiver or enrollment form online prior to March 15th, 2012.
