Scholarship at Calvin

Calvin has three Goldwater Scholars and one honorable mention: Brandon Burkhart, Lauren Manck, Nathan Romero and Ryan Martinie. The Goldwater Scholarship was established by Congress to fund students studying the traditional sciences, mathematics and engineering. Each institution may nominate four students for a Goldwater Scholarship, and Calvin is one of only two schools nationwide to receive recognition for all four nominated students in three successive years: 2009, 2010 and 2011. Geology, geography and environmental studies professor Johnathan Bascom and political science professor Corwin Smidt have been granted Fulbright awards for the upcoming year. Professor Bascom will spend his Fulbright year in Ethiopia, and Corwin Smidt will spend his in The Netherlands. Read more.

Prayers requested, Coop's column

"Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hear my voice! O let your ears be attentive to the voice of my pleading." (Psalm 130: 1&2) "Our prayers matter."

Daniel Vande Streek, 17, son of men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek, was seriously injured in a car crash on April 5.  Please remember this family in your prayers.

Visit Dan's Carepage (search for: danielvs) to follow his progress and inform your prayers.

And as we approach Easter, we remember the Savior to whom we pray sits at God's almighty right hand.

ReCommend Calvin

Parents and friends of Calvin, you are our best ambassadors. Help us recruit students to the school you love!  Talk to high school students, parents, guidance counselors, pastors—even students already admitted to Calvin. Tell your Calvin story, and let us know to whom you're talking!

Tell us about your conversations at www.calvin.edu/go/recommend and you’ll be entered in a drawing to win a set of FREE textbooks (up to $450) for the student of your choice.  (Winners will be announced after May 1.)  Plus, next time you’re on campus, stop by the lobby desk in the Spoelhof College Center and pick up your “Thanks a latte” card – good for a free cup of coffee while you’re on campus.

Advising reminder

The next Academic Advising is Tuesday and Wednesday, April 26 and 27, 2011. There are no classes those days so that  professors are available to meet with their advisees.  Students are instructed to meet with their advisor during this time (per faculty schedule) and prepare for registration. In fact, students must meet with their assigned advisor in order to be cleared for registration.

Please do all you can to encourage your sons and daughters to take full advantage of academic advising. In addition to meeting with an advisor, academic advising days are a good time to get caught up on reading assignments and paper writing.  It should not be a time to leave campus for a long weekend getaway.  Here's more information about academic advising services.

honors convocation

Graduating with honors

We would like to congratulate all the students who will be graduating with honors from Calvin College this spring! The Honors Convocation will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 7:30 p.m., in the Covenant Fine Arts Center Auditorium.

Honors Convocation is a chance for the college community to recognize the academic success of our students. Students who made the Dean's List in either the spring or fall semester of 2010, and students who will graduate with honors in May 2011, will be invited. The Dean's List students are recognized by class. Seniors who have been on the Dean's list every semester they have been at Calvin receive a certificate, and the Honors graduates receive medallions.

Families and friends of the invited students are encouraged to attend and stay for a reception in the Commons following the Convocation. For family and friends that can't travel to campus for this ceremony, live streaming will be available the night of the event.

See the Honors Convocation page or contact Jana Stob for more information.
