Flu clinic information
We plan to hold a flu clinic on Thursday, December 3, from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. in the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Lobby. We hope to have both seasonal influenza vaccine and H1N1 influenza vaccine. The cost for the seasonal flu vaccine is $20. The H1N1 vaccine is free.
Seasonal flu vaccine will be given to any current Calvin College student, faculty or staff and should be given throughout the flu season, into December, January, and beyond. While flu outbreaks can happen as early as October, most of the time, influenza activity peaks in January or later. This vaccine is required for all travelers going abroad with a Calvin program.
H1N1 flu vaccine doses are being given to current Calvin College students, faculty and staff only, according to the Kent County Health Department guidelines.
You must meet one of the following criteria to receive the vaccine:
- 24 years of age and under
- Health care providers
- First responders for Campus Safety
- Pregnant women
- A chronic medical condition such as: diabetes, heart disease, asthma, kidney or liver disease, chronic blood disorders, cerebral palsy (through age 64)
- Caretakers of children under 6 months
These conditions put you at risk and you should receive the vaccine. It’s possible that there may be waves of 2009 H1N1 activity during the 2009-2010 flu season that hit communities more than once over the course of the influenza season, which typically peaks in January or February but can last as late as May.
We also encourage all students who are traveling to receive the vaccine. Many countries are screening arriving passengers for symptoms of the flu and some may require proof of influenza vaccines for entry.Travel alone does not qualify you for the H1N1 vaccine. You still must meet the above criteria.
For those who qualify, these are to be received on a first-come, first-served basis. We hope to continue to receive more vaccine in the near future. We will be giving vaccine to the rest of the Calvin community as it becomes available and as we are directed by our local Health Department.

No greater task...
The President's Report 2009, "No Greater Task: Hearts and Minds Renewing God's World," is a summary of the past school year on campus and a report on the financial situation of the college. This report, available online, includes a Year in Review that covers events from the discovery of a time capsule found at the site of the new Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex in July 2008, to the speech pathology and audiology program introducing a new master’s degree, only the third in Calvin’s 133-year history, in June 2009.
