Calvin Sports: This week's athletic events
Welcome to new Calvin parents! As one academic year closes and another will soon begin, we welcome hundreds of new Calvin parents to the readership of this Calvin-Parents newsletter. Calvin-Parents is published weekly when classes are in session, and 1to 2 times per month during the summer. Parents have told us that the Calvin-Parents newsletter is their critical "link" to the college and report that the information shared is timely, helpful and informative. If you wish to add additional e-mail addresses (work, grandparents, etc.), change delivery to a different address, or to unsubscribe simply follow directions posted on the Calvin-Parents Web site. If you experience any difficulty with these procedures simply send an e-mail message with your request to parents@calvin.edu or call Sue Kuyvenhoven in the parent relations office at 616-526-6802. Calvin-Parents summer schedule Because student life and campus activities slow down considerably during the summer months, Calvin-Parents will be published less frequently (once every two weeks) starting in June. There will be no Calvin-Parents next week, May 26. Weekly issues of Calvin-Parents will resume again at the end of August. Special summer bulletins will be published as needed. If you have individual questions or concerns during the summer please do not hesitate to contact Sue Kuyvenhoven in the parent relations office at 616-526-6802, or send a message to parents@calvin.edu. Important Commencement information: Parking, entrances Please note the following announcements regarding Commencement. Parking for guests: Parking will be available in the west lot of the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex (SFC) which extends from the SFC south to Burton Street. Most handicapped parking spaces are available in the west lot near the Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center, with a few spaces available in each of the other lots. Guests entering from Lake Drive will be directed to the lot north of the Huizenga Tennis & Track Center or the Kalsbeek-Huizenga lot as space permits. Building entrances for guests: Please enter the SFC through the south entrance. The doors from the lobby into the arena will open at 1 p.m. Those who wish to pick up or purchase flowers can find them outside near the southeast corner of the Venema Aquatic Center. Graduates, faculty and staff will be notified of parking and building entrances they are to use. Thank you! There's still time to buy a Prism for your student Prism, Calvin's yearbook, is the only publication that captures the spirit of an entire year at Calvin College. Your student will look up past classmates, remember the professors that inspired them, relive the big game moments, and read copy written by students, staff, and professors across campus about life at Calvin College when they were here. The 2008-2009 PRISM ($10) is a square book in full-color with 180+ pages. You can read more about the Prism in, "Prism: A Colorful Reflection," an article that was in the Spring Spark magazine, the magazine for alumni and friends of Calvin. IMPORTANT: You can order the book through the Campus Store now and it will be available for pick-up at the Campus Store this fall 2009, or for an additional $5 you can have your book shipped to your home. More Commencement information: Tickets, overflow locations Graduates will be able to pick up Commencement tickets at the Calvin College Box Office until May 22, 2009 (student ID required) and may also receive up to four tickets for overflow seating in either the Fine Arts Center, Chapel or Gezon Auditorium. (The Fine Arts Center is the preferred venue for those who cannot use bleacher seating.) Graduates will be responsible for distributing these tickets to parents, family members and other guests attending Commencement. Visit this site if you have more questions about ticketing for Commencement. NCAA III Track and Field National Championships this weekend Not all graduating seniors will be able to attend Saturday's ceremony. Some of them will be competing in the NCAA III Track and Field Championships as the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a combined 15 athletes to Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio --10 from its women’s team and five from its men’s team. Honors Convocation The Honors Convocation was a celebration of achievement for Dean's List students and Honors graduates. The list of graduates and the speeches that were given on April 22 by Professor Bruxvoort and student Corey Velgersdyk are now available online. Events for alumni, friends and families Bookmark the alumni events calendar to keep track of important dates throughout the year, to which you are warmly invited, as a parent, alumni and/or friend of the college. More information is found there for each of the following events: May 22-23: Class of 1959 50-year reunion on campus Jun. 19: Heritage class reunion on campus Parent Calendar Bookmark the parent calendar to keep track of important dates throughout the year, including: May 15-20: Exams May 21: Residence halls close at 10:00 am (for students with Wednesday exams or special permission only). Students, other than graduates, must move out of residence halls 24 hours after their last exam. May 21-23: Commencement activities May 23: Commencement ceremony, 2:00 p.m. May 27: Grade reports for spring semester due to Registrar
