More information from Calvin health services

Calvin College has not been visited by any cases of H1N1 (swine flu) and the health services staff is informed and vigilant regarding this virus.  This message from Calvin health services:

Recently the CDC issued new guidelines and no longer recommends that colleges cancel classes, close campuses, or cancel large gatherings related to possible or confirmed H1N1 cases.  Visit the CDC site for more complete information.

As a Sentinel Reporting Site, Calvin Health services continues to monitor and report suspected cases of influenza-like illnesses (ILI) seen at the health center.  We have seen only 4 cases of ILI since April 27.  We will continue to monitor this and consult with local health officials should our situation change.  We have communicated with students through student-news and on our Web pages.   See the health services Web site for more information.

Chapel

As the academic year ends, the campus community is reflecting on the year past and prayerfully considering the future.  Today's chapel was led by a student worship team and Provost Claudia Beversluis with songs of praise to the Lord who has prospered our work, including prayers for God's blessings for faculty and staff who are retiring or leaving Calvin for other places.

Tomorrow, the final chapel of the year, we will sing of our longing to follow the One who is the Lord of our lives.  A student worship team will lead singing and Dean Bob Crow will offer prayers for God's blessings on those students who are graduating or leaving Calvin.

We warmly invite all to join us in worship in person or online live each day from 10:00-10:20 a.m.

The 25th annual engineering banquet was held Saturday, May 9. The evening's activities began in the Vermeer Engineering Projects Center and Prince Engineering Design Center. There, families were able to view the displays and prototypes developed by the design teams and dinner followed in the Commons Dining Hall. Following the dinner, presentations of all the Senior Engineering Design Projects were given in the Science Building, North Hall, and the Commons Lecture Hall.  Be sure to read more about these projects, including the picture-taking, remote-controlled airplane, that was featured in the local newspaper.

Calvin's summer learning opportunities for all ages

Calvin provides a variety of summer youth camps and educational programs for elementary, middle and high school students. Included among these programs are: athletic, chemistry and foreign language camps, Knollcrest Music Camp, a Wetlands & Woodlands Camp and Academic Camps of Excellence (A.C.E.).  A.C.E. camps offer opportunities to work on sophisticated equipment and learn from brilliant teachers in the areas of computing (using "Scratch" software), chemistry, physics, science, luminescence, math and literature/writing.  Other youth programs including the popular S.T.E.P. (Striving Toward Educational Possibilities) program. Visit Summer Programs for program and registration information for all of these offerings.

There are summer learning opportunities for older learners, too.  The Calvin Academy for Lifelong Learning (CALL) offers June programs to any interested persons, not just CALL members. Find out more on their Web site.
