Dr Spoelhof in 2002Dr. William Spoelhof, 1909-2008

Dr. William Spoelhof, a faithful member of the Calvin College community for eight decades, passed away peacefully in his sleep at 1:45 a.m. on December 3, 2008.  Spoelhof was president of Calvin from 1951 to 1976, but his association with the college first began in the fall of 1927 when he journeyed from his hometown of Paterson, N.J., to begin his studies at Calvin.

Details about his life, his work and his legacy are available on a site dedicated to his memory.

Details for visitation and services are as follows:
Visitation is at the Zaagman Funeral Home on Burton and Woodlawn on Saturday and Sunday, December 6 & 7, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m.

The funeral will be held at Neland Avenue Christian Reformed Church for family and his church community at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 8, followed by a private burial.

A public memorial service will be held in the Calvin Chapel at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, December 8, which would have been his 99th birthday.  His birthday has been a special event on campus for several years and we will now celebrate his new life with Christ.

We praise God for Dr. Spoelhof's long and fruitful life, his love for his family, and his long and loving service to Calvin College, service which continued well after his official retirement over three decades ago.
