Please pray for professors and students With many assignments and term papers coming due this week and next, and final exams beginning next week Saturday, this is a stressful time for both students and professors. Your daily prayers are important for our students, professors, and the Calvin community. You are invited to consider the specific needs of the community by reviewing the Calvin prayer log located on the Faith site. Financial Aid Seminars 2009 High school juniors and seniors and parents are invited to come to free Financial Aid Seminars 2009 on programs available and options to help pay for college. Students from any high school and their parents are welcome at these seminars held at various high schools in Michigan and Illinois. Winter Exam Treat ($18): order deadline is December 3 The Winter Exam Treat features a reusable storage box filled with tasty goodies and supplies for students heading into final exams! The order deadline for this treat is Wednesday, December 3; the treat will be delivered to on-campus students on Tuesday, December 9. (This treat is included in the "Year of Treats" packages. Parents, please remember that these treats are delivered to the residence hall reception desk and not to the dorm room. Students need to retrieve the treat card from their dorm mailbox and pick up their treat from their dorm reception desk). Parents, remember that you can also surprise your student with the popular Pizza and a Movie treat ($25), which can be ordered anytime and often. This treat features a certificate for a large two-topping pizza, a bag of popcorn, and a Blockbuster® gift card! The Calvin Parent Fund: Helping every student, every day Even though a Calvin education is a significant financial commitment for most Calvin parents, many also understand that tuition alone does not cover the cost of a Calvin education and therefore choose to make an annual gift to the Calvin Parent Fund. Without the generous support from parents and donors each year, each Calvin student's tuition would be almost $800 more per year. Together we are furthering God’s work of renewal through the preparation of your sons and daughters for lives of service in God’s Kingdom. We invite and encourage you to consider a year-end gift to the Calvin Parent Fund. Michigan Friends: Did you know that a Michigan couple, filing a joint state income tax return, can claim up to half of their gift to a Michigan college as a state income tax credit (credit not to exceed $200)? In other words, a Michigan couple who make a gift of $400 to Calvin College will receive a $200 state income tax credit, as well as receive gift benefits on their federal return should they choose to itemize gifts. Parent Council The Calvin Parent Council is a representative group of Calvin parents who meet on campus twice annually, foster constructive dialogue between the college and parents, serve as ambassadors for the college, and faithfully support Calvin's mission. Sports information from campus The women's and men's basketball season is underway with one player already being named MIAA Player of the Week, and initial rankings in the Learfield Sports Director's Cup fall sports standings are in for Calvin. Read all the sports information news from campus. Alumni events...all are invited! Bookmark the alumni events calendar to keep track of important dates throughout the year, to which you are warmly invited, as a parent, alumni and/or friend of the college. More information is found there for each of the following events: Dec. 6: Christmas at the Campus Store 2008 on campus Hosted by the Grand Rapids Chapter of the Calvin Alumni Association, the Christmas at the Campus Store sale features discounts, festive shopping and refreshments, book-signings and free gift-wrapping! Proceeds from each purchase fund scholarships for local Calvin-bound high school seniors who demonstrate outstanding Christian character and service. Since 1991, the chapter has funded over 145 scholarships with nearly $225,000 from local alumni. If you are unable to attend the sale, you can always shop for Calvin goods online. Check out the campus store's enhanced site featuring many new items and great gift ideas---a John Calvin bobble head doll, anyone? On-line ordering is quick, easy and always open! "Stories of Alaska" presented by Calvin Theatre Company - December 4, 2008 A student production featuring Alaskan sagas of fact and fiction is part of the 75th anniversary celebration of theatre at Calvin. Handel's "Messiah" - December 5 & 6, 2008 This is the 89th year the Calvin Oratorio Society has presented this work as part of the Christmas traditions in the community. Christmas at the Campus Store - December 6, 2008 Come to campus to enjoy discounts, free refreshments and gift-wrapping, festive shopping and book-signings!
