John Calvin's 500thThe Calvin community is invited to the annual campus celebration of John Calvin's birthday. Along with cake, punch, and singing "Happy Birthday," we will watch a special John Calvin birthday video. You'll also want to join in when we sing a hymn written by Calvin himself. The party will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday July 10, 2009, at the Hoogenboom Health & Recreation Center in the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex. After the birthday party, be sure to stop by the Meeter Center on the 4th floor of the library to see Calvin displays and items from the rare books collection. And, in the meanwhile, visit the Calvin 500 Web site sponsored by the H. H. Meeter Center for Calvin Studies housed in the Hekman Library on campus.
KnightCare premiumHave you noticed a $999 charge on your son or daughter's miscellaneous account? This is the premium for KnightCare, Calvin College's student health insurance plan. Students who enrolled in KnightCare or failed to submit an insurance waiver in the spring are charged the premium during the summer, and payment is due in full by September 1st. There is still time to waive out of KnightCare. Students or parents can download and print a waiver form and submit it to health services. You can find the waiver form online.
What students are doing this summerFollow two students as they trek through Calvin's Ecosystem Preserve, clearing trails, measuring trees and looking for the beautiful indigo bunting.
Fine Arts Center face-liftThe Fine Arts Center (FAC) is ready to get its first major face-lift since its construction in 1966. For students, it’s the place to attend concerts, plays and lectures. For many in the broader community, the events held at the Fine Arts Center — the January Series, the Artist Series and the Festival of Faith & Writing — are their primary engagement with Calvin College. The FAC will be remodeled to create additional practice, rehearsal, teaching and performance space and will receive upgrades to seating, lighting and acoustics as well as new wall and floor finishes. With these improvements, the Covenant Fine Arts Center will continue to welcome Calvin and the broader community for years to come.
PASSPORTPASSPORT is a two-day summer program designed for new students, as well as adult family members, to learn about Calvin through activities and creative workshops that highlight the range of opportunities here. You can visit the Orientation site to find out more about the schedule for each day of the PASSPORT experience, details about family orientation, or what Wilderness PASSPORT is all about.
New college chaplainMary Hulst was recently named college chaplain, only the third in Calvin's history, and the first woman to hold the position which she will assume over the summer. While a student at Calvin, she always considered the chaplain's position to be the "best job on campus."
Mark the calendar with these datesAs you make your plans for the 2009-2010 school year, be sure to save October 23 & 24 for Parent's Weekend and February 26, 27 & 28 for Siblings Weekend. The Parent Council will also hold meetings on these weekends.
