This trip with Outward Bound Costa Rica is a multi-element adventure that incorporates whitewater rafting, surf instruction, a visit to spectacular rainforest waterfall, a tour of an impressive volcano and a ziplining excursion. Begin the course by traveling to the La Fortuna region of Costa Rica where you will get to know an area known for its natural splendor!

Rocky Mountain Backpacking

Rocky Mountain Backpacking

This trip will feature a ten day backpacking trip on a high alpine loop, as well as an attempt at a 14,000 foot peak! This trip will take place in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park. Students will gain proficiency in a full range of wilderness living and travel skills. Students should anticipate moderate hiking, multiple peak ascents, possible snow travel, and, weather cooperating, an attempt at 14,255 Longs Peak!

North Channel Sea Kayaking and Climbing

North Channel Sea Kayaking and Climbing

On this trip, students will embark together on a self-supported sea kayak paddle through the historic North Channel. Along the way students will camp on granite islands and peninsulas, climb and rappel a rock face that drops 60 feet to the water below, and gain the skills needed to safely travel and live out of their kayak for a week. Most students even learn the “Eskimo role”!

Red River Gorge Rock Climbing

Red River Gorge Rock Climbing

The “Red” is the most famous rock climbing area in the Eastern United States. On this course students will learn how to climb slabs, cracks, face, and overhanging rock routes; explore the trails of the Red River Gorge Geological area; rock climb five continuous days at five different areas; and camp at Natural Bridges State Park. This course is tailored to beginners and experienced climbers alike. All students will gain instruction in belaying techniques, movement technique, and rappelling. Students should also anticipate a memorable time of service in the Muir Valley.

Lake Superior Provincial Park Backpacking

The "Coastal Trail" is one of the most scenic stretches of backpacking east of the Rockies. The rocky Superior coastline is a backpacking paradise. Students should anticipate moderate to challenging hiking, mastering backcountry living and travel skills, enjoying sandy beaches, and primitive camping on the week long adventure. We will have two groups for the trip.

Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore Cycle Tour

This experience is designed for the experienced or inexperienced adventurer who loves to cycle and spend time on the beach! This trip will begin south of Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore and culminate at Wilderness State Park. Students will ride the most beautiful stretch of coastal road, covering about 30 miles a day, in the Great Lakes region.

Urban Experience

Urban Experience

Grand Rapids Michigan has so much more to offer than Calvin College. The Urban experience will provide opportunities to interact with Calvin's new and returning students, faculty and staff. You will be exploring the city of Grand Rapids as you take a bike tour, live in Project Neighborhood houses in the Creston Neighborhood, and participate in meaningful service-learning experiences with local partner agencies in the Creston Neighborhood Association.
