Calvin has
a quintet of semester-long off-campus programs, but the 18 students
and two faculty members on this fall's Semester in Honduras program
are likely to be the only group this year to be in the middle of
one of this century's worst hurricanes. When Hurricane Mitch swept
through Honduras in late October it left a path of destruction that
not only devastated the coastal areas but also inland regions --
including Tegucigalpa where the Calvin program is based.
Responding
to the natural disaster became part of the curriculum for the Calvin
students. They have been involved in relief efforts in Honduras,
helping clean up after Mitch. The pictures at left will give you
a taste of what they've faced there. Also, on Calvin's campus a
financial relief drive by faculty, students and staff has netted
almost $25,000to be used by the Semester in Honduras program in
their relief efforts.
