IntroductionCalvin faculty members — many of whom are nationally known — possess expertise in a wide range of areas. This guide is designed to help the working press connect with Calvin experts who may be able to serve as a resource for stories. Arranged alphabetically by topic, it is hoped that this guide will serve as a roadmap to the Calvin faculty. If you are interested in contacting Calvin faculty members, please call them at the work number listed, use their e-mail address or call director of media relations Phil de Haan at 616-526-6475, who can set up interviews and contacts for working media. In the bios of professors to follow you will find listed an office phone number and the professor's e-mail address (available as a direct link). Feel free to call or e-mail professors directly or to call the Office of Media Relations first if you'd like us to be your liaison with the professor. Also, in the bios below, if a professor's name appears as a link clicking on the name will take you to his or her head shot. Finally, please note that for retirees, the number listed is the home phone number and the e-mail address may be less reliable. About CalvinWith about 4,300 students (approximately half of whom hail from Michigan), Calvin is one of North America's largest Christian colleges. Calvin was founded in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1876 as a preparatory school and in 1906 expanded its curriculum and became a junior college. In 1921 Calvin granted its first bachelor of arts degree. Calvin began with seven students, but by 1930 about 450 students attended classes on the Franklin Street campus (now the home of the Grand Rapids Public Schools) where Calvin remained until the 1960s when it moved to its present 370-acre location at the corner of Burton Street and the East Beltline. Calvin aims to provide an education that is shaped by the Christian faith as reflected in the Reformed standards. Because of its relatively large size, Calvin is able to offer a diverse, Christian, liberal-arts education. The curriculum features almost 100 majors and programs, numerous off-campus and foreign study programs, an accelerated program for adults, 250 faculty members, an automated library with over 600,000 holdings, many support services and a beautiful campus. In addition, works by and about reformers close to Calvin, such as Bucer and Beza, are selectively collected. Among college and university libraries, the Meeter Center rare book room contains the largest collection of sixteenth-century imprints of the works of Calvin and other reformers. A small collection of Reformation era editions of the Bible may be found as well. The Calvin Article File is unique to the Center. It contains about 15,000 articles obtained through the research done for the annual Calvin Bibliography published in the Calvin Theological Journal. The microform collection contains microfilm of sixteenth-century imprints of Protestant and Catholic authors, including the works of Farel and early editions of Calvin's Institutes.
