Prayer Requests

Resources & Reflections

The following prayer requests have been received from members of the Calvin community:

I am one of the parents from Nigeria. We continue to pray for Calvin community. Our LORD GOD will continue to abide with you all. Calvary greetings from my family, all of us love all of you. — Barrister Sayo J. Odumosu

Pray for Rose Hohmann and her two sons, Matthew and Gregory. Her husband, John Hohmann, was a firefighter lost in the WTC attacks. I was baptized with her and John. The memorial service was last Sunday. — Rebecca Warren '92

James Glatz (senior; Rockford, Mich.) has an uncle who worked in the World Trade Center. His family still had no news of him. Praise: James' uncle who worked in the WTC is safe! He was out of the building having breakfast when the first plane hit.

Cassie Carlisle (junior; Midland Park, N.J.) and Kelly Groenewal (senior; Wyckhoff, N.J.) can see Manhattan from their yards at home, and have several friends whose fathers work in the Trade Center. Cassie's dad works in Manhattan and was probably forced to stay in the city Tuesday night. Update (9/14): All but one of the fathers of friends of Cassie Carlisle and Kelly Groenewal have been located. The father of the Tedesco familiy remains missing. Cassie's dad is home safe.

Nora Will's (senior; Oak Park, Ill.) uncle works in the Pentagon and yesterday afternoon their family was still uncertain about his welfare. Praise: Nora Wills' uncle was not injured in the Pentagon crash.

Nicole Tieri (daughter of Judy Tieri, January Series Office) was 15 blocks away and witnessed tragedy.

Jerry Mannes, the cousin of Heather Bosma's (sophomore; Grand Rapids, Mich.) boyfriend Josh, works in the terrorist division at the Pentagon. He was there when the planes hit, but praise God he was not hurt.

The brother of Deb Benjamin (senior; Wheaton, Ill.), works at the Pentagon, and has not yet been heard from since the bombing. The family is very anxious. His girlfriend is also still missing. Praise: Debbie Benjamin's brother has been located—alive! He is shaken up, but thankful. Thank you for your prayers!

Elizabeth Schwartz (freshman; Northville, Mich.) has two cousins who work in the World Center Towers. They are both in their 30's, and they are both missing. She is originally from Long Island and she said she still has extended family living and working around New York.

Karen Greiner (sophomore; Big Rapids, Mich.) and Susi Greiner (senior; Big Rapids, Mich.) would like prayers for their uncle, Larry Greiner, who is a volunteer firefighter from Hastings-on-Hudson, a suburb of NYC. He has been dispatched into NYC to assist with search and rescue.

Glenn Fields, a friend of Glenn Weaver (Psychology), works at the World Trade Center. As of last evening we were not able to account for his whereabouts. He is single so we have no immediate family to contact. I and other friends continue to try to get in touch with him and pray that he has been spared. Praise: Thank you and the Calvin community for your prayers. Yesterday we were able to establish that my friend Glenn Fields had been recently transferred to another location in Manhattan and so was not involved in the tragedy at the World Trade Center.

My name is Lindsey Miller (sophomore) and I am from Long Island, New York. A family friend, Brenden McCabe, from my church was on the 96th floor of one of the World Trade Centers. I think he was in the building that fell down first, but I'm not 100% sure. We still have not heard any news on him, whether he is alive or not. He has a wife and four children, the oldest is about 3rd or 4th grade and the youngest is about 1.

I want to give thanks because my uncle, David Dolph, who was working on the 20th floor of tower 1 was able to escape the World Trade Center after the first plane hit. He is home with his wife and children. - Melanie Flick (junior; Beaver Falls, Penn.)

Please add the name of my son Hans Morrison to your list. He is scheduled to fly from Boston's Logan airport for an audition as a percussionist in the San Francisco Symphony. If the airport opens, his flight would be one of the first to follow the same pattern of a high jacked plane yesterday. We do not feel the airport will open, so then pray that he will be at peace over missing this audition. We as a family are so thankful that his arrangements were not for yesterday. - Bev Morrison (Student Academic Services)

Mitchell Weerstra (junior; Holland, Mich.) worked at the World Trade Center this summer. He has been trying to contact people he had worked with. We don't have word yet from him whether he has received good news or bad.

Elizabeth Morrison's (freshman; Annapolis, Md.) dad in is the military in Washington, D.C., and is not allowed to leave.

Viki Sabin (freshman; Highland, Mich.) had a friend who died in the Pentagon.

The pastor of Amy Stephansen (sophomore; Lombard, Ill.) died in an airplane.

Aaron DeVries (freshman; Kendall Park, N.J.) is in the Reserves and has some family in the New York City area that have not been found.

Though my immediate personal family has not been affected by yesterday's crisis, I have many friends, some who are members of my church back home, whose brothers, mothers, fathers, sisters etc. have not been accounted for. Please pray for our church as well: Central Presbyterian Church in Huntington, N.Y. - Craig VanderGoot (sophomore; Greenlawn, N.Y.)

Please put Paul Nimbley and his family on the prayer list. He is a friend of a Calvin student and the cousin of her boyfriend. Paul was working on the 105th floor of the World Trade Center yesterday. He is missing.

Even though I am not directly affected by yesterday's tragic events, I have a friend who is and I would appreciate it if you would keep her in your prayers. Her name is Jaime. She is in the Navy and is stationed in Hawaii, far away from her family who live in Michigan. I am sure she is very nervous about what is going to happen to her and where she is going to go, and I know her family is as well. Please keep both Jaime and her family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. - Katie Schildhouse (senior; Niles, Mich.)

I ask for prayers for my sister, Kara Masucci. She is a nurse at Sloen Kettering Hospital in Manhattan. My mom's cousin Paul Baieria worked in the World Trade Center and is missing. Pray for his wife, children, and parents. - Dana Hebreard (Career Services)

Frank Roberts' (History Department, emeritus) friend's daughter (age 28) was assistant to the CFO Oppenheimer Fund. She was ½ block away and witnessed the tragedy. She is very distraught. Pray for her parents who are presently in Albania.

Anthony Zielke who is enlisted in the Army and currently in Germany, is most likely going to be shipped out once the Government figures out what they are going to do. As my future husband I am very concerned for him and all the men and women in our military. Please pray for them. - Annika Fondse (sophomore; Phoenix, Ariz.)

My sister Rachel Post '98 had a professor and friend at Georgetown who was traveling with her two daughters and husband to Australia when their plane was hijacked and hit the Pentagon. Please pray for the families and friends of this professor. - Emily Post (freshman; Caledonia, Mich.)

I have a prayer of thanks regarding the NY and Pentagon tragedies. My uncle Ed Hager's ex'70 office was hit by a plane in the Pentagon on Tuesday. By God's grace, Tuesday is his "conference day" so he was not in his office. Had he been in his office, he would be dead. God is so gracious! Ed's daughter Becky Hager Shackelford '01 just graduated last December from Calvin. Love in our Awesome God! - Joel Hoekema (senior; Hull, Ia.)

I ask you to pray for the families of those who were murdered in New York and here at the Pentagon, for their co-workers who now stand by helpless, for the firefighter, the rescue workers, the Red Cross volunteers and to the chaplains who minister to them. I also urge you all to discourage any vengeful talk to other Americans of minority faiths and ethnic groups. We need to demonstrate to the world that we are a people given to the rule of law and to the rights of all citizens. These are precious freedoms, many people I know died to secure them. Pray for the men and women in the Armed Forces. We have only just begun. — Chaplain (Colonel) Herman Keizer '65

From Dirk Pruis '82: The most important thing now here is to pray for those affected either directly through the loss of a loved one (did not here of anyone in my son's class or even the school that matter who was lost, but it is too early to tell) or indirectly. My kids are not sure how to react and they will be trying to help them begin to understand in school here today. And of course pray for the bigger picture as retribution seems on the top of too many people's minds instead of restoration and forgiveness.

One of the people I'm working closest with on my current project is the project manager with a company called Nervewire. I work with this person daily, negotiate contracts with him, etc. He was in the Air Force at one time and knew very well the pilot on one of the hijacked Boston flights. He also had a close friend who was a passenger on one of the Boston hijacked flights. So please add him to your prayer list—he is trying to put on a strong front, but is grief stricken. He had a hard time speaking this afternoon as we finally connected and we begun to discuss some business.

Peter and Mike, the cousins of Luke Robinson '97, both live on the east coast. Peter witnessed the two attacks on the World Trade Center from his office on the 35th floor of the GE Building (Rockefeller Center). Later he saw the collapse of the towers from about 30 blocks away. He and Christina are o.k. but very shaken. A number of their friends from law school worked in the WTC. Mike was in his office at Naval Intelligence headquarters in Suitland, MD, just outside DC. The plane that hit the Pentagon impacted at the point where Naval Intelligence has offices. Seven of his fellow intelligence officers and friends are missing.

We continue to seek prayers for our families in the military. Many children who have not experienced life overseas are somewhat frightened and confused by the overwhelming military presence at our stateside bases. At school, they talk about which parent has been deployed and who might be next. Please remember them as well. God bless. — Maj Thomas Rietkerk USAF '89
