Prayer Requests

Resources & Reflections

Calvin's service observing the National Day of Prayer and Rememberance offered a guide to prayer (below).

Prayer Requests
A list of specific prayer requests submitted by members of the Calvin community.

"Lord, Have Mercy; Lord, Hear Our Prayer":
A Guide to Prayer Amid Our Present Distress

1. For God

  • to show himself God: to display clearly his power, wisdom, kindness, justice, mercy, and truth; and to have his name honored through us
  • to advance his Kingdom-within each of our hearts, and to destroy the Devil's hatred and work
  • to accomplish his will, and to enable us to serve and obey it

2. For the Church

  • amid shrill hate and vindictiveness, for power to show the world a better-a more Christ-like-way
  • for beleaguered sisters and brothers in Christ around the world whose situations have become even more perilous
  • for willingness and courage to use our gifts, in Christ's name, to serve and enrich others in this time of acute need

3. For Government Officials, in the US and Around the World

  • for leaders to be given wisdom to discern what is best amid the complex circumstances
  • for leaders to pursue justice, but to keep from revenge--and to be able to distinguish them
  • for the citizenry to follow its leaders, lest chaos ensue and the center not hold
  • for local and state officials, and for public servants (mayors, governors, firefighters, police, rescue personnel, etc.)

4. For Calvin College

  • to be able to maintain its vision and calling amid the present circumstances
  • to show hospitality and sensitivity to those especially affected (international students and staff, friends and relatives of the missing and dead)
  • to model the Christian virtues of our Core Curriculum

5. For Other Persons

  • for the grieving
  • for the anxious and waiting
  • for the hate-filled
  • for the injured, and for those who tend them
  • for the weary, the lonely, the frightened
  • for the especially vulnerable: the elderly and displaced, the mentally and spiritually distressed

6. For Oneself

  • for strength to fix our eyes on Jesus and to anchor our security and hope in Him alone
  • for removal of harbored resentment and hatred
  • for deliverance from the paralysis of fear
  • for patience and trust
  • for ability to meditate and to obey our Lord's promises and commands
