High School Honor Band Festival Concert

The High School Honor Band Festival is a day long event for area instrumentalists. The festival is an opportunity for students to interact, learn from, and perform with members of the Calvin College Wind Ensemble under the direction of a guest conductor.

Ola

Calvin Alumni Choir & Women's Chorale
with guest artist Ola Gjeilo, composer-pianist

Ola Gjeilo (pronounced Yay-lo) studied at the Juilliard School in New York City and is currently one of the most sought after pianist-composers in the world. Gjeilo's concert works are performed globally, and his debut recording as a pianist-composer—the lyrical crossover album Stone Rose—was released in 2007. Many of Gjeilo’s choral works are featured on Northern Lights (2012), which is devoted entirely to his music for choir. This unique Calvin performance will feature the world premiere of a captivating Gjeilo piece, sung by the Alumni Choir and Women’s Chorale.

Oratorio MessiahOratorio Society presents Handel's Messiah

George Frideric Handel composed Messiah in 1741 and it was first performed in Dublin on April 13, 1742. This year marks the Oratorio Society’s 94th presentation of the work. The ensemble will be under the direction of Joel Navarro. Dr. Joel Navarro is associate professor of music at Calvin College.  Prior to his appointment at Calvin, he was assistant professor and chair of the choral conducting department at the University of the Philippines College of Music for sixteen years.  This year marks his eleventh year as music director of the Calvin Oratorio Society. Joining the choir and orchestra will be soloists Joel Navarro, conductor Awet Andemicael, soprano; Martha Hart, mezzo-soprano;
Drake Dantzler, tenor and Benjamin Clements.

Single Ticket: $20-30

Student Rush Pass
Students of any age with a valid student ID can purchase a $5 Student Rush Pass one hour prior to the performance at the Calvin College Box Office located in the west lobby of the Covenant Fine Arts Center. This offer is subject to availability. Student ID must be presented. Limit one ticket per student.

The cost is $15 per day.

The Symposium runs January 30 - February 1, 2014. Calvin Honors Orchestra participants must commit to participation on January 31 & February 1, 2014 (cost:$30).
