Senior Week students must have at least two years of musical experience. Junior Week students must have at least one year of musical experience. All students must bring their own instruments. KMC does not supply instruments.
Senior Week students must participate in either Choir, Concert Band, or String Orchestra. Students may then choose to participate in another ensemble, such Jazz Band or Music Theatre, or take elective classes.
Junior Week students must participate in one ensemble. Students may then choose to participate in second ensemble or take elective classes.

Choir – Practice and perform choral works as an ensemble.
Concert Band – A concert band ensemble. For flute and piccolo, oboe, clarinet, alto and bass clarinet, bassoon, French horn, saxophone, trumpet and cornet, trombone, baritone, euphonium, tuba and percussion.
String Orchestra – For violin, viola, cello and bass players.
Jazz Band – A performance group comprised of saxophones, trumpets/ cornets, trombones, bass clef baritones/ euphoniums, drum set (experience required), electric guitar, electric or string bass and piano. Guitar, bass and piano players must be able to read music well and be comfortable reading chord notation. Rhythm section instrumentation will be limited to two (2) students per instrument. Registration will be determined on a first come, first served basis.
Music Theatre – A group experience that involves singing, dancing and acting to produce selections from a well-known musical. Students are required to provide their own costumes. No student instrumentalists are used. Music Theatre is limited to the first 60 applicants.
Careers in Music (Junior Week only) – Students explore various vocational opportunities through interaction with real-life music professionals.
Chamber Music – Students learn to rehearse and perform in a small ensemble setting. Students will be divided into appropriate ensembles and coached on the intricacies of chamber music performance. For woodwinds, brass and strings only.
Composition:
Beginning Composition (Senior Week only) – Students learn the basics of music composition and put daily lessons into practice by actively composing. Daily homework will be assigned and students will share their work in class each day. The ability to read music is a required.
Advanced Composition (Senior Week only) – Students delve deeper into music composition and take their skills to the next level. Daily homework will be assigned and students will share their work in class each day. Prerequisites include: the ability to read music and have previously taken Beginning Composition (or have instructor approval).
Conducting (Senior Week only) – Students learn about what it takes to lead a musical ensemble effectively. Students will engage in a variety of activities, such as directing basic patterns, observing different conductors, and leading the class through musical examples.
Dance – Students develop an appreciation for dance and proper technique as they learn about various styles. No experience or special equipment required.
Fiddle (Junior Week only) – Students with experience on orchestral string instruments learn the basics of fiddling and folk music in a group setting.
Flute Choir – Students learn about, rehearse, and perform music written for flute ensembles in 3-6 parts. Proper breathing, embouchure, intonation and high note fingerings will be addressed. Students may also be exposed to alto and bass flutes.
Fundamentals of Music Theory – Students learn about the “building blocks” of tonal music through an overview of the basics of music theory (rhythm, melody, scales, intervals, key signatures, chords, and tonality).
Guitar:
Beginning Guitar (0-1 year experience) – Students with limited experience learn basic guitar techniques and notation in a group setting. Students must provide their own guitar. Advanced Guitar (2 or more years of experience) – Students with guitar experience build upon fundamental skills by learning more difficult techniques in a group setting. Students must provide their own guitar.
Handbells – Students learn basic ringing techniques as they rehearse and perform in a handbell ensemble. Students must be able to read music well.
Music and the Movies (Senior Week only) – Students explore the role music has played in cinema from silent films to today’s blockbuster hits.
Music Technology – Students get an overview of available music technology and how to use it. Primary focus is devoted to composition software. Class size is limited to 14 students.
Piano:
Beginning Piano (0-1 year of experience) – Students with limited experience learn basic keyboard skills in a group setting.
Advanced Piano (2 or more years of experience) – Students with piano experience receive “coaching” on varied literature. Students also have the opportunity to perform as soloists and as part of a class ensemble.
Voice – Students work with a professional vocalist in a studio setting to develop and improve tone production and technique. Students are exposed to a variety of exercises and repertoire.
World of Music (Junior Week only) – Students learn about music as it has existed at various time throughout human history, including that in non-Western cultures. No reading of musical notation is involved.
