Pearl Shangkuan Receives Choral Award


Choral AwardCongratulations to Dr. Pearl Shangkuan as the 2014 recipient of the Maynard Klein Choral Award from the Michigan American Choral Directors Association (ACDA). The award is given in recognition of artistic excellence and a lifetime of leadership in the field of choral music. "Pearl's contributions to our art are enormous," noted Dr. Jerry Blackstone, Director of Choral Activities and Professor and Chair of Conducting at the University of Michigan School of Music. "For me, I treasure Pearl most for who she is, for her dedication to her family, her faith, her multitude of friends, and her art."  Dr. Anton Armstrong, Tosdal Professor of Music and Conductor of the St. Olaf Choir, also offered words of congratulations. "I hold her [Pearl] in the highest esteem for her work as a conductor, scholar, and music educator," Armstrong wrote. "As a former President of Michigan ACDA, I can attest that Dr. Shangkuan has been a wonderful ambassador and exemplar of the high standards of beautiful choral music that takes place throughout the great state of Michigan."

Dr. Pearl Shangkuan is a professor of Music at Calvin College where she directs Capella, Women's Chorale and Calvin Alumni Choir and teaches choral conducting and choral literature. She is also the chorus master (endowed Covenant Chair) of the Grammy-nominated Grand Rapids Symphony.

Music Scholarship 2015The ability to make music is one of God’s choicest gifts to His people. Music enriches our lives, rouses our emotions, and stimulates our intellect. At Calvin College there are many opportunities for you to use your musical gifts to “make a joyful noise”!

Scholarships for first-year students are available for piano, organ, voice, brass, woodwinds, strings, percussion and composition.
