Eyes Wide Open: A Second Look at Popular Culture

Matt: Can you tell us about some of the changes you've made to your book Eyes Wide Open and, for those who haven't read it, what the book is about as a whole?

William: Eyes Wide Open explores the intersection of faith perspective and popular art and culture. "Christian" approaches to popular art have tended to make faith the issue by emphasizing religious subject or trying to find theological themes (regardless of authorial intent), for example. I propose instead to think of faith as a context for engaging popular art and culture. This shifts the emphasis from explicitly religious subject matter as the mark of Christian concern and refocuses our attention on the artwork itself, formal artistic qualities and perspective communicated.
