Diversity in Higher Education

As part of the faculty/staff development workshops, Raymond Gant will be presenting on the topic of "Diversity in Higher Education". We will be looking at the complications and challenges associated with the championing of diversity and anti-racism. The event is in collaboration with the Office for Multicultural Affairs.
Gant is currently vice-president of marketing for the Leona Group. His credentials include over 20 years of laboring to inspire and motivate the minds of youth. As founding director of the office of minority student affairs at Ferris State University, Mr. Gant has developed a plethora of active initiatives. For several years, he served as special assistant to the president at Ferris while maintaining directorship of the office of minority student affairs. Gant is the author of "Leading Shadows: An Examination of the African American Experience at Ferris Between 1910 and 2004."

What is belief?

Rene van Woudenberg, a philosopher at the Free University in Amsterdam whose work is widely known on both sides of the Atlantic, will share some of his current work on the nature of belief in an informal lecture at Calvin for philosophy faculty and students. Part of a larger project, this presentation will focus on four questions:
1. What is the metaphysical nature of belief?
2. Can we make sense of the notion of 'degrees of belief'?
3. Which conditions have to be satisfied for S to believe that p?
4. How is belief distinguished from its near relatives: acceptance, faith?
This is an add-on to the Philosophy department's lecture series.

This week a small delegation of Chinese visitors will be visiting Calvin College. While the main purpose of their visit is to learn more about "moral" education, they have also asked for the opportunity to make two presentations
during their time here. Dr. Zhiyong Zhu will present a lecture titled 'State Schooling and Ethnic Identity' in China. Dr. Zhu is a Fulbright scholar who speaks English fluently. (Commons Annex Board Room) |
