Eligibility

For detailed eligibility requirements, applicants should consult the written application materials. Selection committees for seminars and institutes are directed to give first consideration to applicants who have not participated in an NEH supported seminar or institute in the last three years.

We welcome participants from the full range of humanities disciplines, including history, religious studies, languages and literature, art history, music history, and so forth. No knowledge of a foreign language is required, since all readings will be in English. Prior to the start of the institute, all participants will be asked to read a one-volume overview of the Reformation, namely Patrick Collinson's accessible survey, The Reformation: A History (New York: Modern Library, 2004). Participants will be expected to be in residence for the entire period of the institute. They should commit to reading and preparing the documents selected for each session and to participate actively in discussions.
